The UVI is classified on a scale from 1–11+, with higher numbers indicating higher levels of UV radiation:
1–2: Low, generally safe to be outdoors unprotected
3–5: Moderate
6–7: High
8–10: Very high
11+: Extreme
The World Health Organization recommends protecting your skin when the UVI is 3 or higher. You should also take extra precautions if you have pale skin, light hair, freckles or moles, or a history of sunburns. Some other ways to protect yourself from the sun include: Wearing a hat, Wearing sunglasses, Applying sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF), Avoiding being outside during midday, and Seeking shade.
Many factors can affect the UVI, including: Sun elevation, Ozone levels in the atmosphere, Cloud cover, Snow reflection, and Local pollution.
The UVI is calculated using measurements from ground-based spectrometers, radiometers, and satellite measurements of cloud cover and atmospheric ozone.
