Old Man Winter still has some tricks up his sleeve. Significant snowfall is in the forecast. Now is the time to avoid ice dams by investing in a reliable roof rake that is available in most hardware stores. Make sure you follow these safety tips:
*Rake your roof after every six inches of snow. The more snow that accumulates on your roof, the more difficult the job will be, and the higher your risk of ice dams and roof damage.
*DO NOT climb up a ladder. This is highly dangerous when it is cold and icy out. A roof rake is designed for use from the ground, and if you can't reach your roof from there, you should hire a professional.
*Start at the edges of the roof and work your way up (5 to 6 feet from the edge). Do not press down hard as you pull back. The idea is to reduce the depth of the snow on your roof to two or three inches, not to scrape your roof clean.
*Be careful not to rip off your gutters and drains, and be sure to clear the areas around the bottoms of downspouts at ground level once you’re done—you don’t want standing water to freeze and burst your downspouts.
If ice dams result in interior water damage, call the professionals at Burke Emergency Restoration. (603)716-2875.

Why should we be encouraging young men and women to pursue an education in the trades? Because today for every 5 trades person retiring there is only 1 person to take their place.
What does this mean for you? A severe shortage of plumbers, contractors, electricians, masons, welders etc... Did you know that people with a technical education have a higher chance of securing employment compared to those graduating with a 4 year college degree? A traditional liberal arts college education isn't always the best choice. Let's support the trades!

49% of home fires are cause by cooking, specifically, due to grease build-up. If a cooking fire erupts: 1) Leave the cover on until it has cooled. 2) Turn off the heat source. 3) If it's small and manageable, pour baking soda or salt on it to smother the fire. 4) As a last resort, spray the fire with a Class B dry chemical fire extinguisher.
Over this past week, crews at Burke ER are hard at work cleaning the structure and contents for 3 home fires. Our goal: to restore the home to pre-loss condition so that the occupants can quickly return to life as usual.
