🤣🤣🤣 yup. I posted a “missing tote” flyer. Seriously, I don’t care if the totes get emptied if people need them (and aren’t hogging them all)... but don’t steal my totes. Not only is it theft of the college’s property, but it’s just not cool. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you or else you may not get fed.

Out of the ELEVEN (really ten) totes I put in bathrooms (though I did pull one after this particular tote was stolen as it was the first), FIVE have been stolen. WTF peeps. Nobody is getting THAT lucky in one night. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I’m ordering them at least 1000-2000 at a time… we should always have them. So tonight, I put a flyer asking peeps NOT to take the actual tote in bathrooms that still had one.

Maybe I’ll bounce ideas with the school president. We have a phenomenal rapport. We were talking Friday as he was putting on his red ribbon for World AIDS Day (meanwhile, I’m at a table full of supplies on display and in to-go bags with info on HIV and AIDS). ❤️ I wonder if he’ll let us (well, maintenance that is) bolt the totes down. Sure, the totes are only from dollar tree but it’s the principle. If the totes are stolen the we have nothing to refill. How am I supposed to fill non-existent totes??? I WANT people to have access to supplies to be safe but damn peeps!

WHOA. Yesterday, I ended up in an email convo with Susan Wright, the FOUNDER of the NCSF!!! 😳 The National Coalition for S*xual Freedom was founded in 1997 to fight for the s*xual privacy rights of consenting adults. Wright played a part in getting the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders by the American Psychiatric Association (in this case, the DSM-5) changed to reflect that B**M is not a mental disorder, but just a “s*xual paraphilia,” or “unusual urge.” In order to be classified as a paraphilic disorder, the person must involve non-consenting persons, cause harm to others, or cause distress to themselves.

This caught me off-guard because I was doing research for paper 2 of my integrated research essay and I reported a broken link on the site. I was NOT expecting the FOUNDER to reply! We had discussion about how the fight is needed to educate on dispelling myths surrounding B**M after I replied with my own research stats from just this year. I’ve cited Wright and the NCSF in several assignments so far.

My topic is B**M and how lack of education perpetuates misconceptions and stigma that the practices are abusive (EVERYONE needs to give informed consent to separate the two, as well as communication, negotiation, and aftercare). This translates into media misrepresentation like Fifty Shades, which is an AWFUL representation of consent (I cited 3 instances of stalking, Christian’s child abuse at the hands of Mrs. Robinson, and that s***king where Ana explicitly says she hasn’t signed the contract—and I only briefly touched on the first book). Even the movie Secretary (which is a far better representation of B**M) lacks accurate consent. Not to mention, how often are kinky peeps portrayed as mentally ill in the media (they are in both examples)??? Conflation of kinks and mental illness does the kink community NO favors, and gives the impression that all kinky people suffer from mental illness (they don’t).

A genuine part of the problem are the people who are NOT indicative of the B**M community, those who purposefully violate someone who has given enthusiastic consent and those who use B**M as a scapegoat for nefarious crimes against humanity. Unfortunately, this ties into media representation as well—news stories highlight the importance of consent, but it’s not enough to dispel stigmas, because the opposition will argue that nobody can truly consent to B**M.

I will argue that last line with every breath in my body. What right does someone else have to say I can’t ask my husband (or any other adult that I choose, for that matter) to s***k me?

There IS the potential for abuse in B**M, but that’s true of ALL relationships. Sadly, there are abusive people out there who hurt their partners in a non-consensual way, even in the “vanilla” world. In B**M, consent can ALWAYS be revoked.

The stigma against kinksters is very real. I have BINDERS of research to back it up. Yes, binders... and I’ve only been in school since March. I can educate on how the body is capable of decreasing pain based on context and how our brains release endogenous opioids (endorphins) in comparable situations like exercise. You’ve heard the term “runner’s high,” right? It’s an altered state of consciousness, just like “subspace” or “Topspace,” characterized by endorphins. Because, science. Masochists have reported higher pain tolerances than controls in clinical trials (that’s my psych research paper topic 🤣).

Of course, we have the history of psychology to thank for the origins of B**M’s stigmatization. The Marquis de Sade wrote graphic counts of non-consensual s*xual violence. Leopold von Sacher-Masoch glamorized suffering, pain, and humiliation. Psychologist Richard von Kraft-Ebbing coined the terms sa**sm and masochism in the 19th century after the two respective authors. Naturally, Freud weighed in with his crackpot 0.02 (that’s just my personal opinion on Freud—I LOVE psychoanalysis because the unconscious mind is fascinating, but his theories are unfounded—I have 124 pages of those though too). Naturally, this translated into the pathologization appearing in the DSM versions over the years.

The point is: consent counts. It’s also unfair to generalize an entire community based on the representation of a movie. 🤷🏻‍♀️
