Kiaf SEOUL 2024
September 4 - 8
(Preview Day: September 4)

View of Remembrance by Hiroshi Onishi is a subtle exploration of memory and time. Onishi uses lapis lazuli pigment to create blurred branches and foliage, evoking the fleeting nature of memory. The deep blue hue adds a soft, ethereal quality, enhancing the artwork's reflective mood.

Honoring the life and work of Hajin Kang (1943–2023). Born in Daegu, South Korea, Kang found solace in art during his post-war childhood, using drawing as a form of self-preservation. His artistic journey spanned decades, from his first solo exhibition in Seoul in 1972 to his profound minimalistic canvases created through meticulous layering of acrylic. Kang’s work explores the spiritual and emotional, offering a glimpse into something larger than life.

Ryan Faherty: Pile On
August 14 – September 9, 2024
Galerie PICI Seoul

Galerie PICI is delighted to present Ryan Faherty’s debut solo exhibition with the gallery, Pile On, running from August 14 to September 9, 2024. Pile On is an exhibition that delves into the intricate and layered world of mixed media artist Ryan Faherty.

Central to this series are mixed media works on wood that combine painted, drawn, and printed material with sculptural elements on various substrates. Much in the same way that life seeks to spread and fill every available space, his work features anatomical imagery that is densely layered and woven together to create dynamic heaps of organic matter. His interest in anatomy comes from a fascination with the overwhelming complexity of organic life and its relationship to the environments it inhabits, probing the question: where’s the line between living and nonliving matter, and is there a line to be drawn? By mimicking this additive quality in life, he seeks to create artworks that collapse the boundaries between a figure and its environment. The tendency of life is to fill any available niche, crack, and crevice it possibly can. Guided by this, Pile On seeks to emulate and explore the inclination of life to not only persist, but to proliferate by building upon, enmeshing, subsuming, and digesting that which it comes into contact with.

Guest Curator
Gabby Lee (Creative Director, BELLY ACHE)

Ryan Faherty (b. 1990, Boston, MA) is a New York City-based mixed media artist. He earned his BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2013. In addition to his sculptural paintings, Faherty extends his practice into the realm of artist books through a collaborative project called BELLY ACHE, where he translates his complex, layered aesthetic into an intimate, tactile format. His work has been exhibited at Paris Street Gallery in Boston, MA; in group exhibitions at Red Sky Studios in Boston, MA, and Ubique Gallery in New York, NY; and included in Art Book Fairs in Jersey City, NJ, and Boston, MA. Pile On is the artist’s first solo exhibition with Galerie Pici in Seoul, South Korea.

변상호 | Sangho Byun
I Love My Job x 3
2024. 07. 22 - 08. 13

From June 26 to July 15, Galerie PICI presents “Recomposition of Objects,” an exhibition by ceramic artist DukHee Kim. This exhibition invites viewers to see beyond the practical purposes of objects, highlighting unexpected combinations of organic forms and textures. This exhibition is part of our ongoing program to introduce contemporary ceramic works to our gallery audience.

DukHee Kim gives everyday items special significance by incorporating gold. The vibrant reds and reflective golds contrast with the natural essence of clay, transforming it into something luxurious and opulent. By integrating gold elements into ordinary bowls, she imbues these items with a sense of importance and grandeur, elevating the mundane to the extraordinary.

Her ceramic works are not only visually captivating but also offer a tactile experience. The artist’s playful and whimsical elements shine through in the exaggerated forms and bulbous protrusions. These almost cartoon-like features add a sense of fun and lightheartedness, providing viewers with a unique joy and delight that is rarely found in traditional ceramics.
Ceramic artist DukHee Kim (b.1969, Seoul) studied ceramics at Ewha Womans University and its graduate school, Seoul. She furthered her studies in Japan as a research student at Tama Art University in 1999 and at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2000, where she completed her doctoral course in 2004. Since her first solo exhibition in Seoul in 1997, she has been actively working between Korea and Japan. “Recomposition of Objects” marks her first solo exhibition with Galerie PICI.

Group Exhibition: 5/22 - 6/25, 2024, SEOUL

“Dialogues Beyond Words’’ presents a curated collection of profound artworks by five distinctive artists: Toshiro Yamaguchi (b. 1956), Onishi Hiroshi (b. 1961-2011), Yiryang Oh (b. 1962), Shinduk Kang(b.1952) and Oan Kyu (b. 1953). This exhibition focuses on the non-verbal, contemplative interactions between the artworks and the viewers, emphasizing the silent yet powerful exchange of ideas and emotions. Each piece delves into abstract interpretations, the tactile nature of art, and the emotional or philosophical explorations communicated through colors, textures, and forms. Together, these works manifest “Dialogues Beyond Words,” as they communicate their essence through visual language alone—conveying emotions, thoughts, and narratives without uttering a single word. This exhibition invites you to immerse yourself in the silent conversations between the artworks and discover the powerful language of art that transcends spoken words.

Sunsoo Kim, we follow Kim’s recent landscape paintings, set in a rural village in Gokseong Jeollanam-do, where Kim spent his childhood. He relies on fragments of memories rather than being on site to produce them. Kim uses oil paints but his works on canvas emphasize the flatness where almost no texture can be seen.

Welcome to Toronto!
Booth C31

At Art Toronto 2022, Galerie Pici will feature selected works by artists from the gallery’s roster: Shinduk Kang, Oan Kyu, and Hajin Kang. The gallery will also present internationally acclaimed painter and sculptor Lee Ufan’s iconic Correspondence (2002) lithograph work.

The focus of our exhibition is to compare two groups of artists’ distinct practices. One group’s approach to their artwork is from the perspective of a self-development, self-cultivating experience. Often times repetitive body motions are involved in producing their artwork. The other group aids viewers in gaining a new perspective by personalizing their experience. These artists attempt to invite and stimulate the viewer, even at times, evoking memories of past or present events.

Art Toronto takes place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from October 27 - 30, starting with an invite-only preview on Thursday October 27.

Hajin Kang (b. 1943) was born in Daegu South Korea, his childhood was spent in the period after the Korean War (1950-1953). He started his elementary school during this time and everything was in chaos. He draw just to soothe himself, it was part of self-development. It was a process of education, a self-preserving mechanism he had at that time.

His first exhibition was held in Seoul in 1972. Until the early 1980s, his practices were focused on installations, using wires and Hanji paper with recorded frog croaking sounds by the water. He started working with canvas during the early 1980s.

Hajin Kang layers upon layer of acrylic on raw canvas to create far off minimalistic screen but up close multiple colors of dots and lines of Kang’s laborious painting process live in between the layers. This process is repeated endlessly with a series of different monochromatic colors. His practice carries a message of the spiritual and emotional, something larger than life.

Kang’s work is in the Art Bank collection of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Korea.

🇨🇦 Art Toronto returns to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, October 27-30, opening with an invite-only preview Thursday the 27th, from 4-9pm. We will be at the Booth C31.
