⚡️ DC Armature ⚡️

A DC armature is comprised of a few key components, a commutator; a series of copper bars insulated individually from one another, windings; a series of wires tied into the commutator, and the core; stacked steel sheets to allow for armature cooling and conductivity.

A clean and smooth commutator is essential when considering the lifespan of the DC motor. The most common failure of all DC motors are from contamination to the commutator, causing shorts to ground, or carbon buildup within the bars of the commutator causing shorts between windings.

In reference of our most recent post, here is a prime example of Eddy Currents destroying a motor in a very short period of time. The grease has been burnt from electric currents flowing through it, good clean grease is imperative to the protection of your motor. The Eddy Currents have also began to take their tole on the bearing housing as shown in the second picture.

Eddy currents are produced when running electric motors on a VFD (Variable Frequency Drive). These Eddy Currents are detrimental to your bearings without the help of a shaft grounding ring. There are many manufacturers of these mechanisms, however, they all function the same. The ring is grounded to the metal housing of the motor and has either a brush or other conductive materials, which keeps steady and even contact with the shaft. This allows the Eddy Currents to flow directly through the grounding device rather than the bearings themselves. Stopping the Eddy Currents at the bearing protects not only the grease inside, but also the precision bearing fits that otherwise would be compromised by them.

⚡️Ever wonder how an electric motor works?⚡️

Below is a simplified inside look as to how a three phase induction motor works. Each color represents a phase of electricity, the phases are produced 120 degrees away from each other to provide a combined degree of 360. When each phase reaches a maximum or minimum it produces the greatest magnetic pull. That magnetic pull aligns with the opposing magnetic pole on the rotor, this process is repeated with the remaining two phases, and finally back to the first phase to continue the process, thus allowing the motor to spin.
