The Ohio State University has selected Jason Opal as its next dean and director of The Ohio State University at Mansfield, effective Aug. 15. Opal currently serves as associate dean of graduate studies in the Faculty of Arts at McGill University, one of Canada’s leading public research institutions. A scholar and historian of early America and infectious diseases, he is a professor in McGill’s Department of History and Classics with 20 years of academic experience.

At Ohio State Mansfield, Opal will lead efforts to extend and amplify the university’s commitment to student success, innovation in teaching and learning, research opportunities and community engagement.

Shakespeare famously wrote for an “all-male” stage, but it is less well-known that early modern Englishwomen also wrote plays and took part in making theatre in a variety of ways. Around the same time as Shakespeare was writing Othello, one of his female contemporaries, Elizabeth Cary, wrote a play about Mariam, the second wife of King Herod of Judea. First printed in 1613, Elizabeth Cary's The Tragedy of Mariam explores issues such as the ethics of divorce, the threat of women’s public speech, the dangers of defying tyrants, the norms of dramatic convention, and the construction of racial stereotypes.

Ohio State Mansfield students enrolled in ENGL 4520.02: Special Topics in Shakespeare have written and produced this full-length documentary film exploring The Tragedy of Mariam's critical history and its possible futures, featuring performance as well as interviews from leading scholars around the world. Under the direction of Professor Elizabeth Kolkovich, Looking for Mariam, 1613 uses distance learning to bring the high-impact LDP experience to OSU's regional campuses for the first time.

Join us from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 9, as we participate in the 2021 International Fall into Maple Tour. Enjoy a free pancake breakfast, meet the Ohio State maple team, tour the research sugarbush and see some new maple educational materials, all while listening to the Ohio State v. Maryland football game.
