OT Tip! Long handles will change your life!
Do you have trouble reaching or bending? One of these tools may help you!

Sock Donner: Avoid the twisting and bending to get those socks on. This tool is also great for those with weak grip. Just place the sock on the donner, slip your foot in and pull!

Reacher: A great tool that can be used to assist in pulling on pants. The reacher is also great for picking small items off the floor or reaching overhead. Get one with suctions cups, you’ll thank us later!

Donning Shoes: A simple stool can be a great tool to minimize bending. Make it easier with a long handled shoe horn. Try crossing your leg to tie your shoes.

To start off this Parkinson’s Awareness Month, we wanted to share some healthy habits that can be incorporated into your everyday life. These habits can help manage symptoms, as well as lower possible risks.

1. Exercise Regularly- Staying active helps to maintain motor function and slow the process of cell degeneration. Our team at Connections Physical Therapy can assist you in finding an exercise plan that works for you!

2.Have a healthy, well- balanced diet- It is so important to maintain a well- balanced diet filled with whole foods! While there is no set diet to treat Parkinson’s Disease, research has found that foods high in fiber, protein, and antioxidants can help slow the progression down.

3. Stay Hydrated- While it is extremely important for everyone to stay hydrated, Parkinson’s patients can be especially vulnerable to dehydration.

4. Get Restful Sleep- Due to changes within the brain, many patients with Parkinson’s Disease can have difficulty falling and staying asleep. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule and incorporating a nighttime routine can help regulate your sleep schedule.

5. Stay Positive- Last but certainly not least, we want to remind you to stay positive! The best way to manage symptoms is by staying optimistic. Studies have shown that maintaining a positive attitude helps Parkinson’s patients manage their symptoms and slow the progression!

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month!

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects movement. It develops gradually, often starting with a barely noticeable tremor in one hand. Over time, it can cause stiffness or slowing of movement. Parkinson’s disease occurs when nerve cells (neurons) in the brain gradually break down or die. These neurons produce dopamine, a chemical messenger responsible for transmitting signals that coordinate movement.

Connections Physical Therapy has therapists who specialize in treating patients with Parkinson’s Disease. With in depth knowledge on the progression of symptoms, they are able to offer exercise plans and recommendations.

Parkinson’s Disease is a journey of courage, resilience, and hope. Let’s spread awareness, support research, and stand together in solidarity this Parkinson’s Awareness Month. Together, we can make a difference.
