If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms of dry eye, you may know it, but visiting your eye doctor is the first step in finding relief. During your exam, your doctor may check:

💧 The amount of tears you produce
💧 How long it takes for your tears to dry
💧 Your eyelid health

Each of these areas can help us determine if you have dry eye and allow us to recommend a personalized treatment plan for you.

What keeps eyes hydrated?

Our tears are made up of 3 layers: lipid, aqueous, and mucin—and the aqueous layer is the largest. Since our bodies are more than 50% water, staying hydrated not only supports overall health but is key to healthy tear production and eye health.

Maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and attending regular eye exams are all important parts of caring for your vision. Schedule your next exam with us today!

Your tear function comes down to more than just water. Oil is also an essential component of healthy tears, and without it, our tears can evaporate too quickly.

Adding supplements like omega-3 may help support healthy tear production by supplementing oil production. Small lifestyle changes combined with your eye doctor’s recommendations can help provide much-needed relief from dry eye symptoms.

When we’re looking at a screen or doing close work, we tend not to blink as often as usual. This can lead to eye strain and worsen dry eye symptoms. To help relieve your symptoms, we recommend taking regular breaks during screen time.

One quick trick to help with this is the 20–20–20 rule: for every 20 minutes of screen use, look away for 20 seconds to give yourself a break and focus on something at least 20 feet away.

You might be surprised to learn that one common sign of dry eye is overly watery eyes. While this may sound counterintuitive, a poor balance of oils in the outer layer of the tear film can lead to your eyes producing more tears. Often tear quality, rather than quantity, is the cause of dry eyes.

When it’s time to find relief, we can offer personalized, effective treatment. Schedule an appointment to learn more.
