How do you help people who have never gone to the dentist nor learned how to take care of their oral health? You go to them! Kate Iverson, a collaborative practice hygienist at Community Dental Care, provides dental services to children and pregnant mothers at the M Health Fairview Roselawn Clinic in Saint Paul four times a month. Dr. Jim Letts, a physician at the clinic, noticed many of his patients had fairly severe dental disease and wanted to get them care. Kate explains, “This collaboration allows us to provide screenings, education and preventive services in a place that is familiar and convenient to the patients.” Providing access to care is key to our mission and we are grateful to Dr. Letts and the Roselawn Clinic for this collaboration.

Here’s how to keep that little smile healthy:
1. The best way to spot signs of problems is to take your baby for a dental check-up as soon as he has a tooth or by his first birthday. Schedule your dental appointment with Community Dental Care today!

2. Wipe your baby’s gums with a soft, clean cloth after feedings and at bedtime. This helps wipe away sugar and bacteria that together can cause cavities.

Our Program to Improve Community Oral Health (PICOH) was designed to address the need for oral health education and preventive services for underserved and diverse populations. Our Health Educators meet with children, families and pregnant mothers who have dental disease, to engage them in understanding and implementing health habits to reduce their risk of cavities and gum disease. Using motivational interviewing techniques in a caring and compassionate manner, our staff build relationships with patients to bring about positive health behavior change. Children and pregnant mothers enrolled in PICOH reduce their risk of dental disease by 62%, and better understand the negative effects of unhealthy dietary habits such as sweetened drinks/snacks. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recognized PICOH as one of twelve promising models nationwide that increase access to preventive oral health care.

If you have ever tried to concentrate with a toothache, you understand how dental problems interfere with a child’s ability to succeed in school. Untreated tooth decay can lead to pain, difficulty learning, eating and sleeping, missed school days and systemic health complications. Placing dental sealants on molars is an effective and low cost way to prevent tooth decay, especially in children. Sealants are a thin coating painted on the chewing surfaces of teeth to form a protective shield. Sealants protect against 80% of cavities for 2 years and 50% of cavities up to 4 years. Community Dental Care's School-Based Sealant Program provides preventive dental services (dental sealants, fluoride varnish and oral hygiene instruction) and referral assistance to students at 15 elementary schools in the Twin Cities metro, targeting children who may not otherwise have access to dental care. The goals of our program include: prevent dental cavities in permanent teeth of elementary school children; increase health literacy and access to care for students; and improve the oral and overall health of children over their lifetime.
