POW ARTS TRAIL 2024 Study for A Fairy Spot for Mary Delany

I’m going to be showing some paintings made especially for at from 7th March. The show will be entitled Fairy Spots and is inspired by the 18th century artist and botanist Mary Delany, who lesser known for her contribution to the canon of British garden design, recognised, celebrated and cultivated female sexual identity within our landscapes.

Married twice, Delany is also known to have had at least two significant relationships with women in her lifetime, and believed all gardens should have a ‘Fairy Spot’, an intimate place for female friendships to flourish. She is known to have created two grottoes within her career which she adorned the walls of with shell flowers, much like our very own here in Margate. Delany recognised these grottoes as symbols for female sexuality, and felt they shouldn’t be tamed and trimmed, but wild wet and mossy.

I’ve been painting some of my own interpretations of these grottoes which will be on display in the windows of Mori Mori, as well as created some studies of the shell flowers from Margate’s Shell Grotto which will be on the walls inside the restaurant.

The paintings are almost ready to show, but not quite yet, so I’m showing this little study instead!

There will be an evening viewing evening where I’ll be doing an artist Q&A with one of my fave Q&Aer’s on 28th March, and I’ll be sharing all the details for that very soon.

I couldn't stop sticking bits on this Christmas tree collage this morning when I was supposed to be getting ready for work! 🫣😍🤩 I love it!!!
