Did you know that stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide? Let's raise awareness together and make a difference!
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted or reduced, causing brain cell damage. It can happen to anyone at any age, which is why recognizing the signs and acting fast is crucial.
Remember the acronym FAST to identify stroke symptoms:
🔸 F is for facial drooping: Does one side of the face droop or feel numb? Test it by asking the person to smile and ensure symmetry.
🔸 A is for arm weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Have them raise both arms like they're holding a pizza to check for equality.
🔸 S is for slurred speech: Is their speech hard to understand? Ask them to repeat a simple sentence like "the sky is blue" and listen for unusual pronunciation.
🔸 T is for time: If someone shows these symptoms and you're concerned, call emergency services immediately. Remember, time is brain—the sooner they reach the hospital, the more brain can be saved and protected from damage.
Let's share these signs this month and make a positive impact on our communities. Together, we can save lives! 💙

⭐ 5 Essential Tips for Creating a Safe Home Environment for Aging Loved Ones ⭐
As our loved ones age, ensuring a safe and comfortable home environment becomes paramount. Here are 5 essential tips to help you create a secure space for your aging family members:
1️⃣ Remove hazards: Identify and eliminate potential tripping hazards such as loose rugs, cluttered walkways, or low-lying furniture.
2️⃣ Adequate lighting: Install bright, accessible lighting throughout the house, especially in stairways, hallways, and bathrooms.
3️⃣ Bathroom safety: Install grab bars in the shower and near the toilet to prevent slips and falls. Consider adding non-slip mats and a raised toilet seat for extra support.
4️⃣ Fall prevention: Make sure all pathways are clear, use non-slip mats on floors, and secure loose cords or cables. Consider installing handrails on both sides of staircases.
5️⃣ Medication management: Organize medications in a pillbox or dispenser, and keep a list of medications, dosages, and schedules handy. Regularly review medications with a healthcare professional.

Ask yourself what thoughts are running through your head about your role in this situation. Are you thinking that something is wrong and it's your job to fix it?
Linda reminds us that your loved one is aging, and it's normal for them to have increasing needs. It's not your job to fix everything, but to love and support them. Are you a caregiver for a loved one with dementia? Do they become agitated, confused, or restless in the evening? This phenomenon is known as sundowning and can be challenging to manage.
Sundowning can occur in over 60% of people with dementia or Alzheimer's and is thought to be triggered by the change in light at dusk. At Qualicare, our in-home health care and senior care franchise caregivers are experienced in managing sundowning.
To help decrease potential sundowning episodes, the Alzheimer Association recommends maintaining a daily routine, getting outside for natural light, keeping the home well-lit at night, and avoiding stimulating activities in the evening. If you or a loved one is experiencing sundowning, try using calming activities like massage therapy or aromatherapy to ease symptoms.
