Prayers for the family. Thanks Reid Brown for your service to Marietta.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Brown’s family, and to with the thousands of students and educators he positively impacted during his life and tenure as the West Side principal.

Mr. Brown’s legacy lives on today in many ways, including the origination of our school mascot, the gymnasium and music building, the Polk Street marquee, and the belief that all students will be loved, nurtured, and provided an excellent education when they walk through the doors of West Side.

“Be the best bee you can be.”
-Mr. Brown

A True Blue Devil, among many other amazing affiliations. An amazing lady.

I knew this sad day was coming soon... One of my dearest fans and donors of this OM site has passed.... She always mailed a hard check and probably was never on my site. 🤪❤🙏 The definition of a True Southern Class Lady..."Ms. Perk"... back in the day, the only way I got on to play golf at the Cherokee Town and Country Club (..and Peachtree Golf Club) was a phone call to them from her. BOOM.

Howard Dean Gramling Perkinson FitzSimons Lawrence (Ms. Perk) died December 18, 2023. She was the daughter of Dr. W. H. and Emmie Lela Gramling Perkinson. She was born January 5, 1920 on Church Street in Marietta and lived the last years of her life on Cherokee Street. She graduated from Marietta High School as Salutatorian of her class, Miss MHS, captain of the basketball team, associate writer of the Pitchfork, cheerleader, sponsor of HiY, member of Tri High, the Glee Club, and the Latin Club. She graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College 1940 in Lynchburg, Virginia where she was a Chi Omega, President of the Student Body, captain of the basketball team for three years, Am Sam Secret Society, and Greek Play ‘39’40. She was President of the Southeastern Association of Student Governments.

She married James Middleton FitzSimons April 30, 1941 at the Methodist Church on Atlanta Street, Marietta. During and after World War II, She lived in Atlanta 55 years. She was preceded in death by her sons, James Middleton FitzSimons, Jr. and Foster Motte FitzSimons. Her children are Howard

Lee FitzSimons (Teresa) and Gayle Gramling FitzSimons Gragg. Her grand children are Dr. J.M. FitzSimons III and Anne Howard FitzSimons; James Matthew Gragg (Beth) and Mary Anne Gramling Gragg Mason (Walter), Michael Dean FitzSimons (Tori), and Mark Everette FitzSimons. Her great grandchildren are Bella Nicole and Beckett Michael Unger; Kathleen Howard, Sophia Elle, Jeremiah Gunter, and David James Mason; and Gwenyth Opal FitzSimons. She claims Eleanora and Josephine Lawrence, Allison Breedon and Gunner Bruno.

She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Atlanta where she was President of the ECW, founder of the Prayer Chain, sponsor of the youth group, president of St. Hilda’s Circle, member of St. Teresas’ Circle and Daughter of the King. She spent many years volunteering for Tallulah Falls Circle for children, Heart Association, and especially Re****ed Children. She also spent many years on the golf course as a member of Atlanta Woman’s Golf Association and as a member of Cherokee Town and Country Club. She was a member of the Anne Hudgins Shakespeare Class, Marietta since 1942 where she was Secretary for eleven years and occasional Leader and President. She rejoined the DAR.

After her husband’s death in 1994, she married Robert deTreville Lawrence III in 1997. They moved back to Marietta in 2000. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Marietta, St. Anne’s Chapter, and the Prayer Chain. She was a Circle member of the High Museum and a supporter of several theater, music, art and preservation societies. She enjoyed the Shakespeare Class at Elm and playing bridge. She made an effort to walk most days at the Health Place and was grateful for the pleasure there and the friends that accorded her.

Her body was donated to Emory University. A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, 161 Church St., Marietta, Saturday, January 20th at 1:00. She will eventually be buried at St. James’ Cemetery.
