Welcome back to ✨Funeral Tip Friday ✨where we will be sharing helpful funeral tips and information to help you or someone you may know navigate through the funeral planning process.

This week we’ll discuss Power of Attorney. Often times, Power of Attorney can be confused with Next of Kin. These are two very different things.

A Power of Attorney is a legal document that grants an individual to act on your behalf when you are not able to be there in person, mentally incompetent or physically unable to represent yourself.

Unfortunately, once an individual passes away, their Power of Attorney is no longer valid and can no longer make decisions. All final disposition arrangements will be solely the Next of Kin’s responsibility.

Welcome back to ✨Funeral Tip Friday ✨where we will be sharing helpful funeral tips and information to help you or someone you may know navigate through the funeral planning process.

There are plenty of tasks to get done throughout this planning process, let’s focus on the top 3 that should be prioritized within the first couple of days of your loved one passing.

Step 1: Obtain a legal documentation of death, this is also called a pronouncement of death. If your loved one passed in a hospital or nursing home, the staff will handle this. If they passed at home unexpectedly without hospice care, call 911.

Step 2: Arrange for transportation of your loved one from place of death. If no autopsy is needed, the deceased can be picked up by a mortuary or crematory.

Step 3: Gather all important documents & information to make final disposition arrangements. At the arrangement conference, it’s essential to know information about the deceased such as social security number, mother and father’s full name, last known occupation, any last wishes to be fulfilled, insurance policy information, etc.

Let’s start with one of many very important steps, and that is determining the Next of Kin.

A decedent’s Next of Kin is their closest living blood relative. This can include their spouse, children, parents, and adopted family members.

If you are named next of kin, you’re most likely responsible for things like:

1. Making medical decisions
2. Arranging the final disposition
3. Settling personal finances

**If the Next of Kin is a minor (under the age of 18), responsibility will then fall upon the next blood relative**
