The truth about what it's REALLY like to work with me:

I have the mouth of a dirty sailor. (Obviously, I keep it under wraps if you bring your Grandma or four year old in for a visit.) My favorite word begins with an F, and if you feel the same, I already like you. There's no need to censor your dirty mouth here at the office.

If you're doing a health intake with me and I ask you how much you drink per week, don't bow your head in shame as you confess that you have a few glasses of wine per week. I'll probably mention some of my favorite varietals.

I'm a huge foodie, and I LOVE talking food with my clients. If you're on board with this, you'll get an earful about my restaurant recommendations. If you're wise, you'll take them.

I'm the quintessential Scorpio, which means that I am FIERCELY loyal and protective over those I care about-including my clients. Whether you've been with me for 2 weeks or 10 years, healing creates a connection. If you tell me about how you've been wronged, I will plot revenge with you. If you've been mistreated, I will be enraged on your behalf. And if you're really struggling, know that you're probably what I've been thinking about all week long.

I'm like a priest, only way more fun. You can literally tell me anything and I won't judge you. I know where all the bodies are buried, and I keep secrets to the grave.

I'm SO stubborn and I HATE being told what to do. So, that's what I DON'T do with my clients. I'll guide you, I'll make suggestions based on my expertise, and I'll tell you what has historically worked best for people with your issues. You then take that and do what you will with it. I won't judge you, get mad at you, or refuse to see you if you don't follow my "orders." I don't give orders. You're an adult, I'm not here to boss you around.

I pray for my clients, even though I'm not religious at all. When I sense that you are deeply suffering, I go into my office and focus all of my intention and will on you finding peace and having wonderful things come into your life. And it works!

I've been thinking about doing this for a while, even though I have a LOT going on in my life...

You know what I love doing more than anything? Discovering cool s**t and writing about it. Particularly when it comes to food.

For a long time, I hosted a group where I'd talk about what was going on in the town, but it ended up becoming a group about all my foodie adventures. And people loved it! It grew to almost 1500 people...and I barely did anything to maintain it.

For a long time, I thought about creating a Facebook group based on discovering "hole in the wall" places and sharing my finds.
If I started this group, would there be interest in joining it?

P.S. This is a loaf of bread that I made recently…which explains why I’m always looking for restaurants.

The incredible Phiona Gitsham is hosting an astrology event with me tomorrow to cover the very exciting and transformative energies that are coming up over the next few weeks. We are doing this on a sliding scale between $8-88. And it's recorded.

One of the participants (who paid the highest price, by the way) asked if I could gift a spot at this event to someone who needs it. She's all about paying it forward, and thought it would be awesome to surprise someone who is maybe going through a rough patch or needs a little light in their life with this gift.

Last night I was out at a restaurant with a friend. The woman at the table next to us suddenly doubled over and almost collapsed in pain, and then started rocking back and forth, moaning and sweating.

She was with other people who gathered around her to take care of her, so I felt odd intervening. But of course I was concerned.

Her pain seemed to get worse, so I asked her if she was okay, having trouble breathing, felt like she was going to pass out, etc..basically just assessing whether she was having a heart attack.

She said that she was mildly nauseous, the pain was under her ribs on both sides, wasn't radiating anywhere, she could breathe...but the pain was so bad she couldn't stay still.

Immediately I thought, "This is definitely a gallbladder attack." I'm intimately familiar with all the symptoms, since I have the same issue. I remember the first attack I ever had, feeling certain I was dying, that feeling of wanting to crawl out of my skin because the crushing pressure under my ribs felt like a belt of nails wrapped around me.

She then said she had fries and wings before this started (again, another sign-a fatty meal will trigger this.)

I told her that this sounded exactly like a gallbladder attack, BUT that she should definitely go to the ER and find out for sure. Because I don't know everything. And even though my own experience was similar, my experience doesn't dictate ultimate truth.

Then some other woman came in, saw the situation, and announced that she worked in an ER. She asked the woman if she had diabetes (she didn't.) She asked if she ever had low blood sugar before (no.) And then she proceeded to ask the entire restaurant if anyone had blood glucose testing equipment. No one did.

She then told this woman, who was still moaning and writhing in pain, to eat something with sugar in it. The woman had just downed a large sugary margarita before all this started, so I HIGHLY doubt that she needed to get more sugar into her. I also had very little faith that her issue was caused by low blood sugar-but you know what? I'm not a doctor. So I said nothing and waited for the ambulance to arrive.

The "ER nurse" (who I don't actually think was a nurse, because I was eavesdropping after and heard her saying to another customer, "Well, I went to nursing school for a semester...") was CERTAIN this was a diabetes issue. Maybe it was? But she refused to entertain any other option. When I mentioned to her that this was every single symptom of a gallbladder attack, she replied with, "Do you have any equipment to test her blood sugar?"

No. I didn't.

The ambulance finally showed up, to a deafening round of applause, lots of whooping and hollering and drunken cheering. "What a bunch of unempathetic as****es," I thought...and then saw the Easter Bunny dancing his way through the bar. 😂

Anyway, this whole debacle brought me back to a conversation I had recently with a client I've been working with forever around the annoyance of practitioners ONLY viewing things through the perspective of their own narrow, limited lens-that they believe everyone and everything falls within.

Not everything is linked to what you do.

If you offer parasite cleanses, that’s great. Not everyone has a parasite.

Not every weird symptom is linked to Lyme disease.

Not everything is caused by mold, toxins, EMF, gluten, SIBO…the list goes on and on.

As a healthcare practitioner, if you find yourself struggling to find every possible connection to put people into a box of the disease that you specifically treat, shame on you.

Squeezing everyone into your box in order to create a narrative where their dysfunction is absolutely caused by what you treat is bad medicine. It's egocentric, uninspired, and desperate. Because if you are seeing every client through the lens of, "I will make your dysfunction fit into the narrow box of symptoms that I treat, so that I can feel justified taking your money to treat it," you aren't practicing medicine. You're selling snake oil, basically.

I was, and am, SO SURE of what was going on with that lady last night. My background of medical knowledge AND personal knowledge both validated what I saw. But you know what? Even in my certainty, I left the door open. I made a suggestion based on what I know, but I also asked her to get medical testing for validation, because maybe I was wrong. Maybe it WAS something else.

But what if I had said to her, "I'm a medical professional (which I am), I have seen this over and over (which I have) and I've been through this myself (again, I have.) There's no need to go to the ER because this pain feels like it will kill you, but it will absolutely pass. Because it has always passed for me."

Imagine if this woman was like, "Oh God, thank you. Now that I know I'll be fine, I'll just go home and rest until it passes."

Maybe she'd be fine. Probably she would.

Or maybe she would have gone home and died of a heart attack because I DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING.

Knowing what you don't know is often way more powerful than knowing what you know.

And if you are limiting yourself to only viewing your clients through the lens of your own personal experience and beliefs, you are doing them a grave disservice. That is not true medicine.
