Just some thoughts to keep in mind as we head into the Holiday Weekend! 🎆
The 4th of July is tomorrow! Do you have a plan for your pet(s)? July 4th is a particularly busy day for emergency clinics all over, and as much as we love our friends over at Eastern Maine Emergency Veterinary Clinic, I can't imagine that a visit to see them tomorrow is on your agenda. Here are some ways you can avoid the emergency clinic or losing your furry friends!
🍔 Be mindful of what is on the table and in the garbage cans. While humans can indulge in some delcious BBQ food, our pets often can't. Greasy foods like burgers and steaks can cause pancreatitis, so keep those away from your pets. Dispose of food properly and keep trash in an area away from pets. Bones and shells can cause issues, but also beware of corn cobs! Dogs cannot digest them and they can and will cause bowel obstructions!
🐾 Make sure your pet has ID on them at all times, and don't forget to update their information with the microchip company if your contact information has changed. Make sure all fences and perimeters are secure as well. More pets get lost on July 4th than any other day of the year!
💪 Exercise is a great way to keep your pet mentally stimulated and tire them out before the fireworks start. A tired body and mind is less likely to get overstimulated with guests, lots of activity, and noises. Providing them with mental stimulation like a food puzzle or frozen Kong stuffed with peanut butter is a great way for dogs to celebrate. (Also, don't forget to check peanut butter for xylitol. Xylitol ingestion means an immediate trip to the EClinic.)
🏠 We know pets like to be with us, but on a day such as the 4th, it might be best to leave them home. They will be in an area and space familiar to them to provide them comfort. When the fireworks start, we suggest keeping pets inside. Fireworks can be dangerous around anyone, but pets don't understand that danger and have been known to eat unlit fireworks (yes, we have seen it) or will pick them up after they're lit resulting in burns or much, much worse. We suggest placing them in a dark room with shades drawn and running the AC, a TV, or a sound machine to help drown out the booms.
The summer heat has arrived! 🌡️ Keep your fur-baby safe during these scorching days. Remember, the asphalt can get as hot as a skillet, so protect those precious paws during walks or save them for early mornings and late evenings when it's cooler. If it's too hot for your feet, it's too hot for your pet's feet!
4th of July is fast approaching! 🎆 We will be closed on July 4th and 5th in Observance of the Holiday - if you are in need of care during this time please reach out to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital Mount Laurel , NorthStar VETS - Robbinsville or Mount Laurel Animal Hospital. As always, be safe during this day❤️🐶🐈⬛❤️

🎉🎉WE ARE BACK UP AND RUNNING!!! 🎉🎉
We are currently experiencing phone and internet issues - we are here and are addressing the issue… please be patient with us as we correct the issues.
Today is a day to leave your dog at home. It is not a day to take them out running errands.
Today is a day for short walks on grassy areas. It is not a day to walk them on asphalt or take them on an hours long hike.
Heat stroke can set in very quickly, and be fatal if not immediately addressed.
If your dog is young, obese, long-haired, geriatric, or brachycephalic (think Frenchies, Pugs, and Bulldogs), they are more likely to suffer from heat stroke than any other breed, but heat stroke doesn't discriminate.
Please keep your dogs at home today. Make sure they're able to find shade or sit in a cool location. Make sure they have access to water at all times. Activity should be kept to a minimum. Even if they want to run around, discourage that behavior today because they will overheat before they know it.
Look for the symptoms of heat stroke and if you think your dog is suffering from it, do not place them in cold water. Apply cool, wet towels on their bodies and call a veterinarian immediately.
Stay cool out there, folks. It's a hot one!
