The Iowa Scottish Rite Masonic Foundation in conjunction with the UNI Roy Eblen Speech and Hearing Clinic offers an extended language clinic program for preschoolers with speech, language and communication delays. 100% of the donations from this event will go to support this program.

As we approach the New Year, I wanted to share a little bit of happiness that did come from 2020! I am so thankful for the endless support and community I have found through Sami's Sock Monkeys. Thank you from the bottom of my heart if you have ever placed an order, liked or shared a post, or even asked me how business is going! It all truly means so much!

A few highlights from this year:
- The beginning of March, Sami's Sock Monkeys was able to donate 15 handcrafted sock monkeys to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital, an experience I will never forget!
- In July, I received the largest sock monkey order in Sami's Sock Monkey history. 40 sock monkeys for the staff at Mercy!
- This holiday season has been the most successful yet! I have never done this much sewing, but I wouldn't have it any other way. So rewarding to see my customers happy with their personalized, one of a kind sock monkeys! Love seeing the smiles!

My Story

Hello from Sami’s Sock Monkeys! Below is a slight glimpse of how my journey got started.

My favorite movie, Mr. MaGorium’s Wonder Emporium came out on November 16, 2007. The movie features a special toy store that has magic running all throughout. Highly recommend watching if you have not yet. Within the movie is one specific scene that really stuck with my nine year old self. You can find this scene in the highlight video below at time 2:10. Watching this short 15 second scene melted my heart completely.

The Beginning

It was not long before I opened my first sock monkey under the Christmas tree in 2007. That is when the collection and obsession first started. From there my love for sock monkeys grew. I loved the simplicity, creativity, and joy they brought to people. The next Christmas Eve my dad and I decided to pull an all nighter and attempt to make a sock monkey of our own. He pulled out an old pair of wool socks from his drawer and the process began. Nearly taking us all night, we could not have been more proud of our masterpiece. Completely hand sewn, only using a pattern we found from a package. This is when I first learned how to sew. I will forever cherish that night.

Fast forward a couple years, I started making sock monkeys for friends and families. I made them as birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, and just for fun. Throughout the years I have continued to change my methods and perfect the process as much as I could. At this time in my life, I never thought I would ever have my own sock monkey business. Nor did I ever think that I would pursue business as a major.

Youth Entrepreneur Academy

The tables turned quickly during my senior year of high school. At Mason City High School I spotted a flyer for the North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC) Youth Entrepreneur Academy (YEA). I applied for the program out of the whim. When I graduated high school I was completely lost as to what career path I wanted to pursue. However, I thought attending a community college would be a good place to start exploring affordably. High school graduation rolled around and YEA soon approached at the end of June.

During YEA, we spent a week listening to local entrepreneurs and learning about business development through my friend, the Business Model Canvas. Throughout the week we brainstormed and developed business ideas. Creating sock monkeys was not even on my original brainstorm list. I never thought of my monkey obsession as something that could be a business. When sock monkeys finally made way to conversation, my mentors knew right away this was what I needed to work on.

On the fifth and final day of YEA (June 24th, 2016) all of the participants pitched their business ideas in front of a panel of judges. The winners of the pitch competition received $500 seed money towards their business idea.

Sami’s Sock Monkeys was one of the student businesses selected to receive the $500 seed money. From then on, things seemed to pick up quickly. I never thought my weird obsession for sock monkeys would ever catch anyone’s eye or stimulate the creation of my own business. The feedback from the judges, coaches, and mentors throughout the week gave me the confidence to further pursue my dream of creating Sami’s Sock Monkeys.

I am beyond thankful for all who have supported me throughout this process. The NIACC John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center has been the most encouraging to me as I turned my childhood hobby into a business. I can’t imagine being without Sami’s Sock Monkeys, it has truly become a part of who I am.

I have learned so much from this journey. Sami’s Sock Monkeys has challenged me with time management, confidence, and responsibility. I am grateful for the people I have met, the opportunities I have had, and the lessons I have learned through Sami’s Sock Monkeys.
