🎡 County fair season is here, bringing excitement and, let's be honest, some anxiety for competitive show families. Unfortunately, county fairs have become synonymous with drama, leaving many nostalgic for the simpler days.

Fair boards conjure up new rules, seemingly aimed at discouraging the pursuit of victory. Whispers and gossip spread like wildfire, casting doubts on your investments, animal care, and the immense efforts put into preparation.

But do those who judge truly grasp our sacrifices and unwavering dedication? Late nights, early mornings, and the dedication of showing livestock at a level they are yet to understand?

Before criticizing someone's accomplishments, ask yourself if you've worked as hard as they have.

Instead of jumping to conclusions, appreciate the immense commitment and effort they invest in their livestock, recognizing the scale of their endeavor. Ask yourself if you could manage showing and preparing the same number of animals they likely have the responsibility of caring for.

Before gossiping about how they care for their animals, put yourself in their shoes and acknowledge the experiences and countless hours they dedicate to showing at a higher level every year.

Before spreading rumors about who does the work at their house, consider the complexities of their livestock operation. Whether big or small, they may need outside help to manage the day-to-day responsibilities of their business; this doesn't mean they have someone doing their kids' work.

In case you are curious when you see our crazy girls chilling in the pasture when they have full access to a nice, warm, dry barn…

During winter weather we often look out across a pasture to see cattle covered in a blanket of snow. It can be tempting to take this to mean the cows are cold.
Instead this blanket of snow is serving as a literal blanket. It both helps provide an extra layer of insulation and is showing the cows own winter coat is working well. Snow will show us anywhere the cow is loosing heat. In those places the snow will melt leaving a bare spot. Like the roof of a poorly insulated house showing every rafter as the heat from inside melts the snow.
Wet melting snow or freezing rain is far harder on cattle than cold temperatures and unmelted snow.
As long as cattle have plenty of food and shelter from the wind they will be comfortable in temperatures well below freezing. Cattle, all animals, create heat through digestion. An extra ration of hay will be great help to help keep them warm.
