Run the numbers and have the conversations with your owner operators on a regular basis so everyone’s expectations can be managed. The spot market is just leftovers the real smart play is direct freight. The game didn’t change but how we play it has to day in day out.

Shout out to our guy Chris aka Mr. No Excuses aka Mr. Get the job done. How many PO carriers do you know that are capable and willing to pull dry van, Re**er and flatbed loads any day of the week??? Not many!

24/7 has never been nor will it ever be a part of our sales pitch. But if we need to wipe the crust out of our eyes to handle a situation for our drivers then so be it.

A normal day started off with one of our hotshots picking up a few partials and transporting them to Illinois ended up with him running off the road in a construction zone getting stuck and damaging the power steering pump late last night. No one is injured, load still secured and all relevant parties are looped in on the situation. He’ll finish up with repairs and drop off in a few hours on time.

Another solid week in the books.

Oversize/overweight loads are also known as over dimensional and can be defined as any configuration of the truck, trailer and commodity that are OVER the legal height, weight and/or length of a normal load.

Backstory one of the brokers we deal with on one of our dedicated lanes reached out a few days ago to see if one of our carriers could move a couple of boat trailers for one of their customers. At that time the information provided lead us to believe that the load would be of legal size…

ALWAYS ask for the dimensions of EVERYTHING someone plans to put on the truck and pictures if you can get them. One trailer was legal but the other was 13.5’ wide and 50’ long

A simple load just turned into one that required permits, pilot cars and route planning due to road/time restrictions. We also had to schedule our own forklift to be onsite at the shipping and receiving locations.

Time to NEGOTIATE, we were able to go back to our contact and get a pretty penny for the line haul plus get our permits and forklift/rigging costs covered as well.

Was it a headache initially? ABSOLUTELY but nothing is impossible, on to the next one!

The national average rate per mile for flatbeds has steadily risen since January this year!

WHY are the rates going up? Glad you asked!

The seasons are changing LITERALLY and demand for open deck freight is going up. Old man winter is going back into his cave which means construction is picking up.

The need for new infrastructure is pushing the wave. Building materials such as lumber, pipe, steel etc must be transported via flatbeds to facilitate our nations GROWTH.

This is chess not checkers, STRATEGICALLY positioning your trucks in the right location at the right time is the only way to capitalize on this boom!

Another week in the books. One of our hotshot carriers is out running the streets pulling freight.

The name of the game is DEDICATED LANES…

So what’s all the fuss? Dedicated lanes occur when a broker/shipper has consistent freight and a carrier agrees to DEDICATE a certain number of drivers/trucks to haul that freight for a predetermined length of time. That period could be as short as a couple of weeks to as long as a few years…it depends.

What does it take to run dedicated lanes? Glad you asked!

Consistency - there has to be a CAPACITY need for the freight

Efficiency - the drivers/trucks have to be able to run that consistent freight in a timely manner that keeps that particular customer happy with the SERVICE being provided

Communication - keeping the customer in the loop about what’s happening with their freight GOOD or BAD will build mutual trust and respect and could even open the door for more opportunities later.

This is just a birds eye view there are multiple moving parts to get and maintain dedicated lanes.

Perspective…

This is one of our carriers we provide dispatch service for. The driver is familiar and more importantly comfortable driving in inclement weather and HE made the decision to execute and get the job done.
