Owning a home is the single biggest investment a person can make. There's the mortgage, the utilities, the upkeep, and, "SURPRISE...", you have a clogged drain. Below are some tips to try when you experience a drain blockage before calling the professional. Understanding some of the most common causes of drain clogs in your Charlotte, NC home will help you save money when it comes to getting your drains flowing again.

Kitchen sink:
- Check your disposal for debris that can block the holes around the perimeter of the grinding chamber. Often, people aren't aware that the disposal is meant to be ran the entirety of the time you're rinsing off dirty dishes so your drain doesn't have to take it all at once, which can quickly cause a blockage
- Depending on your mechanical abilities, you can remove the trap and make sure there are no blockages there. Be sure to test your connections after reassembly to avoid a mess. If this is not in your comfort zone, you may want to hire a professional to assist.
- Beyond the items listed above, unless you own drain equipment or are familiar with its use, call a reputable professional who can get the drain flowing effectively and efficiently

Bathroom sink / lavatory drains:
- A large percentage of blockages in a bathroom sink / lavatory is soap or hair build-up around the stopper assembly. Hair, toothpaste lids, wrappers, oily soap, and other debris can become lodged on the rod that controls the stopper mechanism in your sink. Depending on your skill level, removing the stopper assembly and clearing out the hair from around the rod will normally get you flowing again.
- At most home improvement stores, you'll find an item in the drain cleaning tool section called "Zip-it Hair Clog Remover" or many other variety of product designed to be inserted into the drain. This is normally plastic and has backwards fins that will grab hair when pulled back out of the drain. This, while not as effective as the first tip, can normally establish better flow until a professional can get there
- If the problem lies beyond what is mentioned above, call a drain professional to assist.

Tub / shower drains
- For bathtubs, hair tends to accumulate on the drain grid, which may be covered by an additional strainer or stopper assembly, depending on the style of drain your tub has. Simply removing the additional strainer or stopper assembly and using a pick or needle-nose pliers to grab the hair and remove from the stopper may work.
- If you own a good quality plunger, you can remove the overflow plate and stuff a wet rag into it to create a seal. Be sure you don't use too small of a rag or let it get too far into the drain or bigger problems could result. After the drain overflow is sealed, use the plunger at the drain and plunge until blockage clears.
- If drains are still backed up beyond what is mentioned above, contact your drain professional to assist

Red Fox Plumbing does not recommend any drain chemical to be used in any plumbing system, especially if the home is older with metallic piping system (cast iron / galvanized)
Main sewer drains should always be cleared by a professional and make sure the company you choose has the equipment to inspect the line with a camera at completion. Sewer main clogs are not normal and are often a sign of larger problems in the portion of your plumbing system you can not see. The addition of this trailer last year at this time has helped me be prepared for many different situations. Normally, when the trailer is being used, there’s an installation happening or a drain emergency. Since this is used for storage of drain cleaning equipment that can handle both large and small issues AND is used for installation jobs, many issues found while clearing sewers or other drains can be permanently corrected onsite, in cases where there’s access and enough time allocated to fix the issue for good.

Top-notch installation for a top-notch client. Finished up a two-day tankless installation where we removed and eliminated TWO tank-style water heaters with ONE Navien tankless water heater (NPE-A series)……

But no; we didn’t stop there…….

Repiped all of the hot water lines in the entire crawlspace in a “structured loop” to use the systems built-in recirculating features and now, not only does the client have endless hot water; they have it delivered to their faucets and fixtures faster than before and will be fully covered for the next two years on any issues they may have with the installation, parts, or tweaks to the system to optimize the performance.
