The Secret to Peace December 6, 2023

Anxiety, worry, and fear are closely related to one another. Together, they combine to form a dark cloud that obscures God's presence, promises, and peace. Writing in very difficult circumstances, Paul shared his secret for overcoming anxiety. First he reminded the Philippians that God was present with them, and to rejoice in that knowledge. Then he told them the secret of exchanging anxiety for peace. Where do you need to follow his advice?

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. —Philippians 4:6-7

How do you respond to being complimented? The ability to receive and respond to praise says much about our inclination to edge God out or exalt Him only. Servant leaders are aware that their ability to be a blessing to others comes from God, and that they are indebted to God and those around them for any success they experience. Sometimes a simple “thank you” is an appropriate response, other times acknowledging the efforts of others and redirecting the praise to them is most apt. How will your response to praise exalt God?

David’s success in his confrontation with Goliath brought him into the king’s presence. How open are you to the change God wants to see in your life? All of us have a tendency to want to control or protect certain aspects of our lives. God, however, wants free access to every part of us—motivations, thoughts, relationships, behaviors, daily practices. As God, He has the right to step in and rearrange our plans, goals, priorities, and dreams at any time. We can trust Him to do the right thing. Where is He calling you to trustingly follow Him without conditions today?

Clinging: Strength or Weakness November 20, 2023

Clingy people tend to have a bad reputation. Yet surely the determining factor is not the act of clinging, but the object to which one clings. Clinging to lies, to sin, to harmful behavior or destructive people is something to avoid. But clinging to truth, to Jesus-like behavior, to Jesus Himself is wisdom that reaps far-reaching benefits in all of life. To whom or what do you cling? How is your dependency on Jesus shaping the way you live, love, and lead in His name?

Admitting You Were Wrong November 17, 2023

All of us will have opportunities to admit that we’ve been wrong. A careless word, a thoughtless action, a missed opportunity, a self-serving act; they just happen. The disciple whom Jesus loved gives us an action plan to follow when we do not live, love, or lead like Jesus. Allow God to redeem your failures, like He did those of the first disciples.

If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.—1 John 1:7-9 NLT

What Energizes You? November 13, 2023

What nourishes your heart and mind, your soul and spirit? What energizes you, getting you up in the morning and keeping you going in the face of difficulties? Is it pleasure, prestige, power, position? Or is it something greater that will stand the test of time and eternity? Jesus’ disciples were amazed at His focus on the eternal to the exclusion of even basic daily needs.

Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?” “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”—John 4:31-34

God has given each of us an arena in which He calls us to serve others. Jesus’ model of servant leadership is equally valid wherever we find ourselves: at home, at work, in church, in the community. Where has God placed you? Are children looking at you as their model of someone who wholeheartedly follows and emulates Jesus? Are employees or co-workers following your example? Perhaps other disciples are consciously or unconsciously modeling their discipleship after you. Do non-believers look at you as an example of a Jesus-follower? Let God shine through you today.

Silence November 6, 2023

Silence is one of the essential components of solitude. First we need to find an environment that is free from distracting sounds. Then we quiet our hearts and minds from the things that would distract us from our Savior’s voice. The pressures and busy-ness of the world clamor from without, temptation and worry clamor within. Yet Jesus longs to meet with us one-on-one. Do you long to meet with Him?

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.—Revelation 3:20

Prayer: Jesus, I hear Your knock, and I am coming now to open the door to spend time with You. Distractions press in on me from within and without. Clear them away. Lead me to the place of quiet and solitude where I can focus on Your presence and the Spirit’s leading. I ask in Your name, amen.

Jesus’ resolve to honor the Father was evident throughout His life, from His earliest years to His final moments on the earth. Satan couldn’t deter Him, nor could well-meaning friends or vindictive opponents. In all things, He resolved to honor God and exalt Him only, in spite of temptation, suffering or rejection. How resolved are you to exalt God?

The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. Whether we believe we’re doing it or not, all of us desire to live life to the fullest. Jesus demonstrated that there is more to life and being human than the world offers. Like Peter on the water, we may see Jesus standing in front of us and long to join Him in what He is doing. A few steps and we start looking around us, losing focus and succumbing to fear as we realize the audacity of the step we’ve taken. What has God called you to do? Keep your eyes on Him, call out for help, and grasp His hand. Keep going!

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. Perhaps you long for such people to stand by your side, and you whisper a silent prayer that God would answer this desire. Who faithfully partners with you in prayer? Who can you ask to pray with you?

He Shows the Way October 18, 2023

Jesus made His home with us so that we can find our home in Him and lead others to do the same. What an incredible truth – that God would make His home with us. He has inhabited our world, experiencing its stress, our struggles, our temptations, our challenges. Family challenges? Jesus had them. Trusting God for daily provision? Yes, that, too. Ministering to hurting people? Facing opposition? Jesus empathizes and shows us the way forward.

So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.—John 1:14 NLT

Asking Others for Help October 11, 2023

What keeps you from asking other people for help? Is it pride, not wanting others to think you need help? Is it fear that people might judge or reject you? God does not intend for us to isolate ourselves; Jesus Himself developed close earthly relationships with His disciples, who then did the same in the early church. True Christian community and fellowship is characterized by sharing one another’s burdens. Who can you ask for prayerful and wise support in the leadership challenges facing you?

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. —Galatians 6:2

Prayer: God, thank You for brothers and sisters in Christ who are on this transformational journey with me. Others around us may rush through life at the mercy of daily pressures, but as servant leaders, we are not called to live life according to the world's pressures. Taking intentional time to focus on God's presence and purpose, and His priorities and plans for this day gives us His eternal perspective. As a result, we can move into this day led by His Spirit rather than being pushed and pulled by circumstances around us.

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! When Stakes Are High October 4, 2023

Hardship isn’t an excuse to revert to the world’s way of leading; it is an opportunity for God to be glorified. When the challenges seem overwhelming, God’s call doesn’t change, it intensifies. Where are the stakes so high that you are willing to risk everything on doing it God’s way?

Jesus took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. We are familiar with Jesus’ exclusive claim to be the only way to God (John 14:6) and the consistent testimony of the early church that “salvation is found in no one else” (Acts 4:12). Have we stopped to consider that Jesus’ call to servant leadership is just as exclusive as His call to salvation? Jesus came announcing the kingdom of heaven where there is one Lord, one vision, one mission, one set of values, and One who sends us to lead in His name.

Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave.—Matthew 20:25-27

Prayer: Jesus, today may my life reflect Your salvation and may my leadership reflect Your call to servant leadership. I pray in Your name and for Your kingdom’s sake, amen.

What inspires you? What stirs your heart and will to new levels of commitment and action? Leading like Jesus means that our leadership is not the rote implementation of leadership philosophy and methodology. Leading like Jesus means that we have been gripped by God’s grace, caught up in His purposes, and are being shaped by Him as servant leaders. We are being transformed by His Spirit to increasingly reflect Jesus to those around us.

And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18

Back to Basics: Choosing Words Wisely September 25, 2023

Jesus never seemed to be at a loss for words. Whether being asked an honest question, being challenged, or responding to a need, He spoke words of grace and truth. Every response flowed from an awareness of what God was doing and how He could best represent the Father in the moment. What about you? What opportunities will you have to represent the Father today? How can you prepare to represent Him well with your words?

Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. Ephesians 4:14, 15

Prayer: Father, let me dwell in You and in Your Word so that I hear and speak the words You give. In Jesus’ name, amen.
