From the moment of our first sin, we tried to explain away its consequences and avoid our responsibility by making excuses. We even tried earning our way back into God’s favor, but nothing worked. Only God can mend that which we have broken, and that’s the mission God chose: reconciling us to God, to one another, and to the world. -Pastor Paul | Link in bio/newsfeed to complete worship message.

Bridge Builders Fellowship (everyone welcome!) meets tonight, June 11 at 7pm in The Commons featuring Greg Jarrell, a Charlotte native & author of “Our Trespasses,” which uncovers how race, geography, policy, and religion have created haunted landscapes in Charlotte & throughout the US. As you think ahead to Juneteenth, view this educational resource below.

What is Juneteenth? Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the end of slavery in the United States. It's a day to reflect on the past, celebrate progress, and reaffirm our commitment to equality. Let's commemorate this historic milestone with hope for a better future.

Indirectly in 1 Timothy 2:1-6a (NRSVUE), Paul is teaching the church about God's mission: about who God is, why the Christian Church exists, and how we function within our context. It explains why new converts to the Way of Jesus were being disowned by their families; why neighbors turned them in as traitors and why the emperor used their deaths as public entertainment. Through prayer, lives will be changed, and others will come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, the truth of God. That's the mission Paul sets forth as the foundation for growing the fledging Christian Church in Ephesus.

The more I studied this passage, the more I reflected on our mission today as Christians and as a church. I believe that Jesus further defined our mission in the Acts of the Apostles when he commissions his disciples, saying: Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you." (Matt.28:19-20, NRSV).

That's our mission as Christians. But it's more than that. In living out God's mission, we are serving as living witnesses of how our lives can be transformed by what we believe, what we do, and what we say. And in the process, we will come to the full knowledge of God's truth in Jesus.

"...On days that are hard or painful, the best news of all is that before I was called anything else, God called me, “Beloved.” That is true yesterday, today, and tomorrow, new names or old, nicknames or legal names. You and I will always, first, be: “God’s beloved child.” - Pastor Chuck Wilson.

The prophets had the burden of looking at the world and seeing what God sees, knowing what God knows and feeling what God feels. But a true prophet remembers that they also sinned and helped mess up the world. So they follow Micah’s third command “to walk humbly with God.” -Pastor Paul

Did you know there is some connection between commencement addresses typically heard at graduations and the speech that Jesus gave to the disciples?

Commencement speakers often seize the significance of the moment and challenge the listeners to rise to the occasion. They widen the graduates’ gaze beyond their own social circle, and summon them to be part of something greater than themselves.

Like all great commencement speeches, Jesus seized the moment. He told the disciples that there were challenges ahead, but that they were to carry the gospel of God’s love to the furthest reaches of the earth, beyond their small social circles. Along the way, they would not be alone, for the Spirit would come upon them. They would receive the Holy Spirit’s power and comfort to achieve great things for the Kingdom, and they would participate in God’s ongoing project: the healing of the world and redemption of all creation.

This Sunday, we'll hear from a few of our graduating students and join in celebrating our graduates during the 11:00 service!

God wants us to love kindness. The prophet Micah uses the word “Hesed”. In the old testament, it’s the basis of God’s relationship with human beings. It’s steadfast love that expresses itself in doing. Love is a verb, not a noun. It is an action, not a feeling. -Pastor Paul
