It’s that time of year again!!!! It’s time to get those seed potatoes in the ground for zone 8a. It’s also time to get your tomato seeds started for a strong spring start. We have changed focus slightly here at Horizon Farms. We are no longer wholesalers and will now be focusing on educating others on how to maximize your yarden (yard+garden). Stay tuned for more updates and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

We are inundated with zucchini. Party pan squashes are turning out more each day, and the crook beck squash is getting fired up also. Call, text, or message me now for yours.

Here are a few of the variety of things growing alongside of the squash and zucchini I showcased in the previous post. I have several winter squash growing that we absolutely love. Spaghetti squash, honey nut squash, bush delicata, burgess buttercup, and the standard waltham butternut. I have a few eightball zucchini plants just to be different. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Thank you for all of the interest.

First decent harvest of the summer vegetable season. The zucchini is leading the charge with pattypan squash following closely in second place. The summer crook beck squash was slow to take off but is growing well now. I am looking forward to showing off the garden goodies this season and enjoying them ourselves. Our potato crop is growing nicely at the moment and I will let you know when they become ready. Thank you for all the support. Be sure to check in from time to time for the updates.

Why use a broad fork? Because it loosens the soil breaking up the compaction that tilling introduces. It also allows for water and air to reach deep into the soil. And lastly, it allows you to pull a 15 inch dandelion root out of the soil 3 days after the last rain.

It’s time to bill my potato plants so they will increase the yields in the fields. I also found a grub and vine borer larvae, may they rest in peace.

Here are the before and after of the garden following the flame w**ding session. You really do not have to “burn” the w**ds to kill them. You just need to interrupt their cellular structures to achieve the outcome you desire. This is typically witnessed when the w**d slumps as the heat is applied in its direction.

It’s that time of the year again! Time to plant seed potatoes. We are planting Yukon Gold, German Butterball, and French Fingerlings. Check back as the garden progresses.

Although we have been quiet lately, we have not been idle. We now have double drip irrigation on the 10 fifty foot rows in the garden.the rows are approximately 4 feet wide each. In the photos you can still see the patch of organic ginger growing, the lonely Chocolate Carolina Reaper plant, and in the last photo is a beautiful Chocolate Carolina Reaper! We are planning for an abundance of collards to meet the needs of all our community for sides in any meal. I am also looking to grow some carrots, lettuce, spinach, radishes, and kale. Stay tuned for photos of everything growing. Thank you for all the support.

***Nerdy post alert.*** Here are some of my Pink Brandywine tomatoes. Our tomato crop this year has been hit by aphids, rabbits, birds, and some disease during the normal South Carolina July heat. Perfect storm for less than desirable harvest. But, we did a Brix test on these tomatoes and compared to the same test on this same tomato last year. Last year, when I started the minimal till practices and began researching Jadam Organic farming, our pink Brandywine read just above a 3 on the Brix test. This year it read a 5! This is still a lower than average number, but definitely moving in the right direction. Typically tomatoes are a 6 (average) to a 12 (phenomenal). I will continue to perform these tests with my refractometer for personal research on our farm to grow the most nutritious food possible. The black plastic is how we are turning over our summer garden beds for the fall/winter garden beds. We solarize the w**ds and spent crops and speed their decay to release the nutrients stored in their cells for the soil. The decayed vegetation also forms a mulch which we plant directly through. The final photo was dinner. A french toast bacon and tomato sandwich. It was a full half inch of our pink Brandywine. So good. Thank you for all of your support. Stay tuned as we showcase the fall garden in the near future.

It was a “gourdious” day at Horizon Farm! This was the first time we have tried growing these varieties of butternut squash, Bush Delicata, and the Burgess Buttercup. These will not be offered for sale as it was just some test plantings, but we will keep you posted on how to use them and how they turn out. Squash and zucchini is starting to feel the effects of pest pressure and are showing production or dying all together. Good thing though, the tomatoes are nearing readiness! Thank you for all the support.

Steady as they come. Squash in the form of crook neck, sunburst pattypan, and Bennings Green Tint. Zucchini in the form of Eight ball and Spineless Perfection. Bristol and Long Fellow slicing cucumbers. Tomatoes are starting to turn slowly. Call, text, or message now as these will not last long. Cheaper fresher, and more nutritious than the major grocery store chains. Thank you for all the support.

Things are heating up at Horizon Farms! Our littlest workers are busy as… well, you know. This was harvested this morning. Yesterday on my walk through i had just one crook neck squash ready, now this! I am growing eight ball and spineless perfection zucchini; yellow sunburst pattypan squash, gentry crook neck squash and Bennings Green Tint pattypan squash. We also have a plethora of heirloom tomatoes growing (12 varieties), beans, okra, and butternut squash. Unfortunately my potato harvest has been poor, only small quarter sized runts. Stay tuned for all the growing updates!

Now that the frost is over… we grow!!

Small potato plants among the cover crop. Some people will see a mess of a garden, but there are other who will see a pesticide free, inorganic fertilizer free, sustainable, and self sufficient garden that feeds itself with the use of biological systems. The last photo is the cool t-post sprinkler I picked up.

This sweet potato was harvested Late August 2021. Once removed from the ground you will need to allow it to sit in the heat out of the direct sunlight, a shade tree works well elevated off the ground. The potatoes will sit outside for approximately 1.5-2 weeks to allow the starches to turn into sugars that give the sweet potato it’s great taste.

Crimson clover, rye grass, and mustard green seed for spring cover crop.
