On August 27, 2022, Jim Melhart passed away peacefully at the age of 78, surrounded by his wife and daughters. Jim was a pillar of the local community and music world for more than 50 years. Jim founded Melhart Music and grew it into one of the largest full line music instrument sales, repair, and manufacturing centers in the country. He was an astute businessman and true innovator, holding 10 patents in the music industry. Creating, inventing, and perfecting music instruments and equipment was his life’s passion. The family always joked that Jim wouldn't stop working until he died, and he lived up to that. He truly loved what he did and had no intention of giving it up.

Jim was also a major supporter of music education in Texas and has been involved in countless competitions, contests, clinics, publications, sponsorships, and educational events. In addition to music, Jim had a wide array of hobbies including racing, boating, skiing, and mechanics. Jim became a winning dirt track stock car racer in the early 1980’s, even qualifying for the World 600 NASCAR Race in Charlotte in 1984.

Jim had his entry into the music world at the age of 7, when he learned to play the drums and began working for his father, Walter, at the Horn Shop. He was playing the drums professionally by the age of 17, performing up to five nights a week. By 18, he was working as a shipping clerk and road rep, and was also the only band instrument repairman in all of Corpus Christi, Texas. Jim attended Del Mar College, University of Texas, University of Houston, and Texas A&I University, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Business with a minor in Mechanical Engineering.

In 1969, Jim opened Melhart Music in Corpus Christi as a piano and organ store with only a $600 investment. His live music performances allowed his family to survive in the business’s early days. Jim would travel to Mcallen, Texas once a month, with his van packed with pianos to sell. In 1970, he opened up a piano and organ store in McAllen. This became the foundation for Melhart Music Center, a full line store and later Melhart Manufacturing. In the mid ‘80s, Melhart Music Center expanded its business outside of the U.S., selling speaker cabinets overseas. Now Melhart’s manufacturers more than 250 different products and is the #1 band tower manufacturer in the U.S. The tremendous growth of Melhart music can be attributed to Jim’s entrepreneurial spirit and passion for his work.

Jim is survived by his wife Betty, daughters Terri (Manos), Toni (Grimes), Tami, and Lori; his grandchildren Catie, Torri, Lauren, Allison, Jonathan, and Odin; siblings Bette, Larry, Susan, Julie, Kelly, and Jeanne; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Dorothy, brothers Bill & Joe, and sister Teddie.

Business will continue as normal at Melharts, but with a hole in our hearts. Service arrangements are pending and will be announced at a later date.
