Seeing your pets makes our day! We are so happy we have been able to offer these Wellness Clinic events more often for you all. We know there is such a need for affordable veterinary care and we are doing all we can to provide that for the Rio Grande Valley.

We appreciate your patience when you call to schedule an appointment. We are the only non-profit, low-cost clinic in Hidalgo County with only one vet on-staff for spay/neuter surgeries. We have a visiting vet that assists us with the Wellness events. As a high-volume clinic, it is difficult for us to answer every call, but please leave a message with your call-back number and we will get back to you. You are also welcomed to schedule an appointment in person.

At the moment, we do not have a date yet for our next Wellness Clinic event. Thank you, again, to Dr. Rivera for helping us better help the RGV community to keep their pets healthy.

National K9 Veterans Day, March 13, is a day set aside to commemorate the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs throughout history.

It was on March 13, 1942, that the Army began training for its new War Dog Program, also known as the "K-9 Corps," marking the first time that dogs were officially a part of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Officially a part of the service or not, the dogs of war span centuries and include such heroes as Sgt. Stubby, the original war dog; Chips, the most decorated dog in World War II; Lex, who retired with his fallen owners family; and Cairo, the Navy SEAL working dog on the bin Laden raid.

Today's military dogs are valued as important members of their military units and even have their own retirement ceremonies, awards and medals and memorial services.

We thank them for their service. ❤️💙

March 8th is Akita Day! These big, fluffy dogs have some very devoted fans, and definitely deserve recognition. In fact, Japan has declared the Akita a national treasure.

The date holds a special significance to Akita aficionados, as it was on March 8, 1935, that Hachiko, the most famous member of the breed, crossed the Rainbow Bridge to reunite with the human he loved.

Akitas were once protectors of Japanese royalty and four-legged friends of Samurai warriors. Considered a symbol of joy and longevity in Japanese culture, a small Akita statue is often presented to parents to celebrate the arrival of their child.

🚨 March is Pet Poison Prevention Month 🚨
It’s a good time to be reminded of the dangers of accidental pet poisonings and how to prevent them.

About one-fifth of all phone calls to the Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) involve pets who’ve accidently swallowed human medications.

1. Over-the-counter (OTC) medications were the most common group of toxicants pets ingested. They include vitamins, OTC pain medications (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen), herbal supplements, antihistamines, and cold and flu medications.

2. Human Prescriptions - Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder medications, antidepressants, and heart medications make up a significant amount of these cases.

3. Food - Xylitol, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic make up most of these cases.

4. Chocolate (almost 60 cases a day) - The popularity of chocolate gifts for occasions like Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Easter adds to the danger.

5. Veterinary Products - Flavored medications and misread labels are a big reason pets run into trouble with veterinary products. Pet owners should remember that childproof does not mean petproof when it comes to containers.

📞 The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) is your best resource for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you think your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call (888) 426-4435. A consultation fee may apply.

DID YOU KNOW?
Each day over 70,000 puppies and kittens are born in the US.. and because of overpopulation, more than 3.7 millions animals are still being euthanized each year in shelters across the country.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
• Spay and neuter your pets. Don’t add to the overpopulation of homeless animals by allowing your pets to breed.
• Don’t buy from a breeder. Adopt from your local shelter or rescue.
