Today I had the honor of marrying one of our clerks Meredith and her significant other, Eric. It was an honor for me to perform the ceremony as I have known Meredith since she was a child when I worked with her mother at juvenile court! Please help me congratulate the happy couple! People identifying themselves as law enforcement officials have been contacting people and advising them that they have either been selected for jury duty or missed jury duty and a warrant for your arrest has been/will be issued. They will then ask you to pay a fee to erase the warrant.

If you are wanted, we will never call to tell you there is a warrant for your arrest or ask you for money.

Today we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A man who’s pioneering spirit and preaching of love brought us all closer together. May we always strive to love thy neighbor.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Deputy Sean Free who passed away yesterday and the entire Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Free was someone I have had the pleasure of getting to know over the past few years and who I was luckily enough to spend time with just a couple of weeks. A man who was always full of life and loved serving his community. He will be greatly missed.

It is with a heavy heart to say one of Henry’s own has passed away. Jeff Nelson was a great officer and wonderful training officer. He has touched so many lives. I lift his family, friends and the police community up in thoughts and prayers.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families, fellow students and staff who knew the students involved in the accident. Please lift up this high school community and all of the families during this difficult time.

Henry County State Court Chief Judge Vincent “Vinny” Lotti and the Clerk’s office is advising residents to be aware of a new scam that has been occurring in the Henry County area recently.

Several residents have received calls saying that they have missed jury duty and law enforcement is en route to arrest them. The caller also says they can avoid being arrested if they pay a fine.

The scammers will direct residents to pay through Green Dot MoneyPak cards. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office does not collect fines for the courts. This is only accomplished through the court system itself and the courts do NOT solicit payment via phone or the Sheriff’s Office.

If you receive a call and are not sure if it is legitimate, please contact the Henry County State Clerk’s Office at 770-288-7800.

February is Black History Month and there is so much more history than a month can provide. These men and women have done so much, not just for our community but for the country as a whole.

I cannot let the day close without remembering and honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I remember vividly my first semester in college reading his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and being struck by the brilliance of his writing and temperament. It was one of those moments you remember forever and help shape your thought process. It is why I strive daily to present a forum where all people are treated fairly and justly. My hope is we all strive to leave a positive mark on this Earth as great as his.
