I was out showing properties this morning when I came across this absolutely spectacular American Agave in full bloom near Hampton, Georgia.

The asparagus-like stalk with gorgeous yellow blooms is towering above the ground at least 30 feet!

This agave is also known as a "Century Plant," which has large spiky-edged gray-green leaves at the base, and typically lives between 10 and 30 years; though some can live much longer in ideal climate settings. The plant thrives in places with desert-like temps, including northern Mexico and the American southwest.

This is a particularly dramatic event, not only because you will rarely ever see anything like this in our neck of the woods but, also, because sadly, this plant only blooms once in it's entire lifetime! Then it dies. But it leaves behind buds on the base that can root and form new plants.

The only other local property that I've ever seen such large agave plants thriving was at the former home of Jerry Lyles near Ola. He had a greenhouse on his property where he collected and grew agaves, and there were two extremely large specimens flanking either side of his driveway.

Happy Father's Day!

I came across this front page story from the “Hampton News.” June 12, 1979. I was just a little over a year old at the time. After selling real estate for other brokers for several years, my dad decided to strike out on his own and open a Century 21 office in Hampton.

I love this. There he is in his gold Century 21 jacket. The article says my mom made the decorations on the office walls. You can see her holding me in her arms in one of the photos.

He would later open his own firm, Buddy Kelley Properties, Inc. in McDonough. It is now one of the oldest and most trusted independently owned real estate firms on the southside of Atlanta.

Today, my dad is semi-retired. And I am now the proud owner and broker of Buddy Kelley Properties.

Integrity, tradition and community are very important to me. I strive every day to match the hard work and dedication that he put into building this successful local business.

We still offer our growing community the “small town” service that was the way we expected business to be in the past, but is hard to find today.

Congratulations to my good buddy Kyle Brooks aka BlackCatTips - The Art of Kyle Brooks on his collaboration with Georgia Pet Foundation to create a new Georgia license plate benefiting spay/neuter organizations!

Kyle is a renowned folk artist who also happens to be a Henry County native. His whimsical street art can be found all over the state, including murals right here in McDonough.

By purchasing this piece of art for your vehicle, you're not just adding flair to your ride; you're also helping to save lives. Each purchase supports the Georgia Pet Foundation's funding of programs with free or low-cost spay/neuter services. Let's drive change together!

One of the organizations that Julia and I proudly support is Ferst Readers of Henry County.

Julia served on the Ferst Readers board of directors several years ago.

In the real estate business, I visit many different homes during the work week.

A few months ago I met a family at a listing appointment. A preschool daughter was interrupting our meeting begging her mom to read to her.

I told my client that I was so pleased to see a young child eager to crack open a book.

She said that a new book had just arrived in the mail from Ferst Readers, and that her daughter looks forward to the delivery every month.

I can’t think of a better endorsement for the work that this organization does for our community.

Ferst Readers mails quality, age-specific books each month free of charge to children, birth to age five, who are registered in Henry County.

The books are chosen by a team of child development specialists, including Kathy Pillatzki, director of the Henry County Public Library System. The arrival of a book in the mail at home is designed to encourage parents to make time to read to their child.

Would you consider pledging a donation to this worthy cause? Perhaps consider joining the “Ferst Readers Henry Hundred,” a group of citizens who pledge to support Ferst with an annual gift of $100 or more.

Your generosity ensures that Ferst Readers can send books to 2,000-plus children monthly!

"As lumber is the primary support for building a house, words are the primary structure for learning. There are really two efficient ways to get words into a person's brain: either by seeing them or by hearing them. Since it will be years before an infant uses their eyes for actual reading, the best source for vocabulary and brain building becomes the ear. What we send into that ear becomes the foundation for the child's "brain house."
We read to children for all the same reasons we talk with children; to reassure, to entertain, to bond, to inform or explain, to arouse curiosity, and to inspire. But in reading aloud we also build vocabulary, associate reading with pleasure, create background knowledge, provide a reading role model, and plant the desire to read." You know the saying, "They aren't making 'old' houses anymore!"

It's always a joy to broker the sale of older properties in downtown McDonough. This circa 1910 property has definitely seen better days. But she was built to last and stand the test of time. She's just been waiting for someone special to give her a makeover.

I can't wait to see what the new owners have in mind!

Today is film actor and director Clint Eastwood’s 94th birthday!

Eastwood was in Kelleytown, GA back in June 2018 filming scenes for his movie, “The Mule.”

What was really special is that he filmed on land where my grandad, Bud Kelley, and his brothers and sister were born and raised. Literally. And across the street is the old Kelleytown general store with the white rectangle painted on the side of it, where their friends and neighbors would watch movies in the 1930’s. I’ve included an old 1990’s article from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that talks more about this.

I'm proud of my friend Jennifer Gardner Carter for her willingness to serve our school board. She will be an asset to the board of education. Please encourage your friends and family to vote in this important election!

Thank you, Beau Kelley, for your endorsement!! Vote early through May 17th or on Election Day - May 21st. 🗳 Find your precinct for Election Day voting: https://mvp.sos.ga.gov/s/

"School board members are the critical link between the classroom and the community. The decisions that they make today often have more of a lasting impact on the community than any other elected body at the local level of government.

As a Realtor, I often hear the refrain “location, location, location” when it comes to home sales. But, in my opinion, "schools, schools, schools” is actually more appropriate because nothing affects your property values and the overall desirability of your community more than the caliber of your public school system.

It is your duty as a voter to select board members who will work diligently and thoughtfully to provide an opportunity for all students to receive a high-quality education.

That's why I am so proud that Jennifer Carter is seeking a seat on the Henry County Board of Education.

Jennifer will prioritize our students over personal ambitions. She understands the importance of recruiting (and retaining!) talented teachers. As a mom of young children, she knows that parents have to be an integral part of the discussion. And that our schools must be a safe learning environment.

I've known Jennifer for many years. Jennifer has a big heart for this community. She's someone I like to call a "go-giver;" she identifies a need and then does something about it. Like me, she has deep Henry County roots; she wants to foster an environment that keeps other families here for generations, too. She demonstrates uncompromising integrity, high moral standards, and ethics.

I hope you will join me in encouraging others to head to the polls and make Jennifer Carter our next school board member!"

May is Small Business Month, and I will be highlighting several local small businesses that make a big impact in Henry County.

Thompson Market is celebrating its 25th anniversary!

Proprietor Monterey Thompson started her business selling fresh vegetables, fruits and Georgia Grown goods at a tiny stand right beside the old Planters Warehouse in downtown McDonough. Today she has grown to occupy a large storefront just a couple blocks away. She even has her own branded items including a popular vegetable soup mix.

In addition to serving and supporting many non-profits and charity events, Monterey is also a wedding officiant. She’s married many couples in the Square, on the steps of the court house, and at McDonough city hall.

One of the things I miss most about Sunday lunch at my late Grandma Kelley's house in Kelleytown is the fresh cooked vegetables.

She would call me on Saturday and say something like, "I'm cooking lunch tomorrow. I bought some peas from Miss Thompson."

Sharing a good meal together is a treasured southern tradition. And Thompson Market is at the heart of many special meals! ❤️

In the business I'm in, I pay close attention to our county's tax collector.

When new people move to our community, one of the first government offices they visit is the tax commissioner.

I can't tell you how many people tell me how impressed they are with Michael Harris and the office he manages. The staff is friendly, helpful and, most importantly, trained well.

This comes from the top down. Leadership matters in this role.

Michael Harris makes a hard job look easy.

Thank you for all you do, Michael!

A tax commissioner is one of the most important offices in any county government.

The tax commissioner is elected every four years and serves as agent of the State Revenue Commissioner for the registration of motor vehicles. The tax commissioner also performs all functions related to billing, collecting, disbursing and accounting for property taxes (ad valorem taxes) collected in the county on behalf of the State of Georgia, the Henry County Commission, and the Henry County Board of Education.

Henry County is blessed with one of the best tax commissioners in the state, Michael Harris.

Harris has worn many hats in the county over the years, including civil engineer, development plan director and public works director.

In these capacities he has overseen numerous departments including Planning and Zoning, Building, GIS, Transit, Senior Services and Parks and Recreation.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Howard University, as well as completion of the Senior Executive program at the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia, and is a 2010 graduate of Leadership Georgia.

As a 25-year resident of Henry County, Michael has been active in a variety of local organizations including volunteering with Meals On Wheels, coaching youth sports, leading a local Boys Scout troop, and serving as a volunteer tutor at a local middle school.

Thank you, Michael, for being an asset to the citizens of Henry County!

Please share this post to show your appreciation for the tough job he executes every day with professionalism.

My wife and I donated a Little Free Library to Big Spring Park in downtown McDonough several years ago.

Recently, it’s been vandalized. The door has been torn off three times. My brother-in-law had fixed the door twice.

It was damaged again over the last couple weeks.

I noticed this morning that a Good Samaritan had crafted a brand new wood door, painted it, added the plexiglass window and attached hardware. It looks so nice!

Thank you very much to whoever did this good deed. It is so appreciated! 📚

One of my favorite neighborhoods in McDonough is Lakehaven. With two swimming pools, tennis courts, and miles of tree-lined streets to get your daily steps in, it's got a little something special for everyone!

My clients were already longtime McDonough residents, but were seeking something a little bigger with room to entertain the grandkids. This brick beauty on a cul-de-sac street in Lakehaven fit the bill!

As a Realtor, I often get to be a small part of important family milestones. If you are seeking an experienced agent that will serve your family with care, I'd appreciate the opportunity to earn your business!

03/24/2024

My client, Gabe, purchased his first home on Friday. I take great care in working with first-time homebuyers, and I am proud that he bought a property in McDonough that he intends to improve and make his own.

Buying a home for the first time can be overwhelming — from finding a place that’s the right fit for you to saving up for a down payment, budgeting for closing costs and everything in between.

One of the most important things you need to buy a house for the first time is a real estate agent you can trust, who is experienced, and who has your best interests at heart.

I'd appreciate the opportunity to earn your business!
