Did you know the average American consumes 3.5 pounds of candy during the Halloween season.

The maximum daily added sugar is 24 grams (about 6 teaspoons) per day for children.

• Candy does a great job making products that look like the typical candy we love, such as M&M’s and peanut butter cups, but with 40% less sugar and nothing artificial. Their products are also gluten-free, vegan, non-GMO, and still very tasty.

Swap out those sugary meals with healthier options. Why?

🚫 The not recommended options are high in carbohydrates and sugar, leading to a quick spike in blood sugar levels, followed by a crash. This can result in inattention, anxiety, mood swings, tantrums, and memory issues.

✅ The healthy alternatives are packed with protein, healthy fats, and fiber, which are digested gradually, preventing sudden surges in blood sugar levels. These options have a low glycemic index.

The glycemic index measures how quickly and how high our blood sugar levels rise after consuming foods with carbohydrates. When we eat carbs, our body converts them into sugar, causing spikes in blood sugar. Foods rich in carbs but lacking in fiber, protein, and fat can lead to significant increases in blood sugar.

🍽 The brain relies on proper nutrition. Starting the day with a high-carb, the high-sugar meal can lead to behavioral issues.

As the school bells ring once again, it's time to equip your little ones with the best start to their day. Breakfast is the brain's best friend! 🧠✨

📌 Did you know that about 25% of the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals from the food you eat go directly to fueling your brain? So, when your kids begin their day with meals high in carbs and sugars, their brains might end up relying mainly on sugar or simple carbs for energy, which could lead to behavior problems. So, avoid meals that are loaded with high amounts of carbohydrates, with or without added sugar.

Here are few creative healthy lunch ideas:

✅ Veggie Wraps: Fill whole-grain wraps with hummus, sliced turkey, spinach, and colorful veggies. Skip the artificially colored wraps and opt for whole-food options instead.

✅ Bento Boxes: Create a balanced bento box with compartments for veggies, fruits, cheese, whole-grain crackers, and lean protein like grilled chicken. This fun and interactive lunch lets your child mix and match different flavors and textures.

✅ Healthy Pasta: Opt for whole wheat pasta tossed with a homemade tomato sauce packed with veggies.

Sip, Sip, Hooray! 🥤 Transitioning to Open Cups and Straws
It's never too early to start practicing with open cups and straws. Let's go on a sipping adventure before the the one-year milestone!

🥤 OPEN CUP: Start practicing with a small open cup (with support) after introducing solids (6 months). Fill it with purée to help the baby grasp the concept of sipping from the rim. As their skills improve, transition to water.

Good purées to try in the cup:

🍎 Unsweetened applesauce

🍑 Puréed peaches or nectarines

🍓 Puréed berries

🥕 Puréed carrot

🎃 Puréed pumpkin

🥭 Puréed mango

🥤 STRAW CUP: Introduce a straw around 7-8 months (start with water!). Choose a cup with a squeeze feature to assist the baby in understanding how to use the straw.

🍼 BOTTLE WEANING: The AAP recommends weaning bottles by 12 months. Wean from the bottle between 12-15 months and transition to a straw or open cup as the primary drinking source. All the practice will pay off! Avoid prolonged bottle use, as it promotes immature oral motor patterns.

Sometimes, babies may sleep with their mouths open. While it might seem adorable, it's important to pay attention to this sleeping behavior. 👄👶🏼

Keeping your baby's mouth closed while sleeping is important for several reasons:

➡ Keeping the mouth closed with the tongue up is the correct resting tongue position for babies (and adults too!).

➡ Babies naturally breathe through their noses, but they may resort to mouth breathing if their nasal airway is blocked.

➡ Closing the mouth encourages the tongue to press against the hard palate, activating the nerves and promoting a calming and regulating effect on the baby.

➡ The tongue resting against the hard palate helps develop a wide oral structure, which is beneficial for optimal oral development.

➡ Nasal breaths are filtered, while mouth breaths are not. Mouth breathing can lead to enlarged tonsils, adenoids, sleep-disordered breathing, and sleep apnea.

Children who aren’t treated for mouth breathing can develop:

✅ Long, narrow faces

✅ Narrow mouths

✅ Gummy smiles

✅ Dental malocclusion, including a large overbite and crowded teeth

✅ Poor posture

✅ Make sure your baby's mouth stays closed while they sleep!

Are you ready to hit the pool and make a splash with your little swimmers this summer? 🏊‍♀️ But did you know excessive exposure to chlorine has been linked to various health issues, including skin problems, asthma, and allergies?

Keep your little ones protected from chlorine's effects while they splash around this summer. Here's how:

1️⃣ Pre-shower: Rinse off before swimming to wash away foreign chemicals that react with chlorine, like sweat. 🚿

2️⃣ Chlorine-resistant fabric: Choose swimsuits designed to resist chlorine, minimizing absorption into their delicate skin. 🩱

3️⃣ Protective skin barrier: Apply a thin layer of natural oil like avocado, almond, jojoba, argan, or coconut oil to help reduce chlorine exposure. 🧴

4️⃣ Wear goggles to protect those precious eyes from chlorine's sting and drying effects. 👓

5️⃣ Post-shower: Wash away residual chlorine 🚿

6️⃣ Vitamin C Spray solution: Neutralize chlorine's effects by using a vitamin C spray. Mix 2 tsp of ascorbic acid with 1 cup of warm water, pour into a spray bottle, and apply to their skin and hair after swimming. 🍊

Prime offers two types: Prime Energy and Prime Hydration, both with a mix of filtered water, coconut water, sucralose, acesulfame potassium, and natural flavorings.

While the hydration drink contains 10% coconut water and some additives, the energy drink packs the punch of a double shot of espresso! 😳 Although there is a small warning that it's not suitable for children, it may not be very noticeable.

Possible side effects of caffeine consumption in children may include:

➡ Restlessness and hyperactivity
➡ Sleep disturbances
➡ Increased heart rate
➡ Dehydration
➡ Gastrointestinal discomfort

Comparing it to Coke and popular energy drinks, Prime and others tend to be high in sugar or artificial sweeteners, which we should aim to reduce for our health.

Considering the high sugar or artificial sweetener content in sports drinks, it's wise to explore healthier alternatives:

➡ Pure coconut water
➡ Mineral water infused with fresh fruits (such as citrus, berries, or cucumbers)
➡ Homemade electrolyte drinks

So, are Prime drinks healthy? The answer is NO. Let's always remember to read the ingredients carefully and ensure we're giving our kids exactly what we intend to. 🤗
