Spotted these two magnificent cormorants off the coast of Cape Cod! Here are some fun facts:

1. Expert Divers: Cormorants are known for their diving skills, often plunging up to 45 feet underwater to catch fish! 🐟. They don't have oil glands that makes their wings water repellent so they can actually dive down without being buoyant.
2. Spread Their Wings: You might see cormorants standing with their wings spread out. This unique pose helps them dry their feathers since their wings dont have the water repellent oil gland and therefore aren’t completely waterproof. ☀️
3. Fast Swimmers: These birds can swim fast using their webbed feet to propel themselves and their wings to steer and chase fish. 🏊‍♂️
4. Ancient Birds: Cormorants have been around for millions of years. They have even been mentioned in ancient texts and folklore. 📜

Glacier Express! 🚂 The splendor of the Swiss Alps with vibrant hues of nature. My train winds its way around the rocky mountain lakes such as Lake Toma, which is known as the source of the Rhine and is near the Oberalp Pass. The glacial "flour" is made up of very fine particles of rock that are created when glaciers grind against rock surfaces. These particles are so small that they don't quickly settle to the bottom of the lake, but instead remain suspended in the water. When sunlight hits the lake, these particles scatter the light, absorbing the red and yellow wavelengths and reflecting the blue and green wavelengths back to our eyes, which gives the water its stunning turquoise color.. "

On my way on a family ski trip captured this image from my window seat at 36,000 feet. Breathtaking beauty of Southwest Wyoming from this aerial perspective! 🏔️✈️ We’re soaring above the landscapes nestled between the Seminoe and Shirley Mountains, part of the vast Rocky Mountain chain that serves as the backbone of North America.

These geological formations date back millions of years and tell a story of a landscape sculpted by the relentless forces of erosion and uplift. The ridges and valleys you see are like the Earth’s own history book, with each layer representing a different era of geological activity.

Notice how the snow-dusted peaks catch the golden glow of the sun, creating a dazzling contrast with the shadowed valleys. This region is a showcase of erosional artistry, with the elements carving through sedimentary rock to reveal the rugged terrain we see today. The snow highlights ancient watercourses, where once rivers ran, now leaving behind a network of dry ravines.

This remote part of Wyoming, often known for its rich deposits of minerals and fossil fuels, is an adventurer’s paradise offering a unique glimpse into the Earth’s tumultuous past. As a geology buff lover of natural wonder, the landscape here is a testament to our enduring and dynamic planet/home.

Meet Nature’s Vibrant Messengers: The Cardinal and the Bluejay 🌟

With a beautiful Sunday afternoon, today was a perfect day to sit in the back yard and enjoy/photograph nature. One of my favorite times of the year is when we (try to) transition from the crispness of winter to the hopeful beginnings of spring, two of nature’s most colorful characters begin to take center stage on the East Coast landscapes: the striking male Cardinal and the vivid Bluejay. 🍃❄️➡️🌸

The Northern Cardinal, with its brilliant red plumage, is more than just a visual treat. Known for their melodic chirps, Cardinals are one of the few bird species where both males and females sing.
And did you know? Rather than our human voice box (larynx) birds have a syrinx, a highly specialized organ located at the base of a bird’s trachea where it splits into the bronchi (air passages to the lungs). This positioning allows for efficient sound production even during both inhalation and exhalation. Songbirds, like the cardinal, have a particularly sophisticated syrinx with muscles that can adjust the tension of the vibrating membranes and the shape of the syrinx, allowing for precise control over pitch, volume, and quality of sound. Some birds can even produce more than one sound at a time.

They often sing from the nest to communicate with their mates, making them the serenading symbols of warmth and vitality as we bid farewell to the colder months. 🎶🔴

The Bluejay, on the other hand, is no less fascinating with its bright blue feathers and a bold personality to match. These intelligent birds are known for their complex social structures and have been observed using tools in captivity, showcasing their problem-solving skills. As harbingers of spring, Bluejays symbolize clarity and vision, guiding us into the new season with their striking presence. 🔵🧠

Both birds hold a special place in the heart of Virginia, embodying the state’s natural beauty and the cycle of seasons. The Cardinal, Virginia’s state bird, is revered for its year-round, steadfast presence, symbolizing strength and endurance. Meanwhile, the Bluejay, with its lively spirit, brings color and cheer to the stillness of winter, reminding us of the vibrancy of life that awaits in spring.

As we welcome the changing of the seasons, let these birds inspire us with their resilience, beauty, and the harmonious balance they bring to our natural world.

1. The blue-footed b***y name originates from the Spanish word “bobo,” which means silly or foolish. These birds tend to have a lack of regard for possible danger, making them vulnerable at times.
2. Blue-footed boobies’ blue feet come from the nutrients of fresh fish they eat. The blue pigment can indicate if a blue-footed b***y is nourished. The more pigmented the blue, the healthier the bird.

🏊‍♂️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️ Congratulations to Dr. Bajoghli, who has competed in over a dozen of triathlons in the last 18 years, for completing this year's Reston Triathlon. He swam 1500 meters (.93 mile) in Lake Audubon, cycled 40k (25 miles), and ran a 10K (6.2 miles).

It was another rewarding and fun day to help staff the First Aid tent along with Dr. Chun Hong
for the Jim McDonnell Lake Swim in Lake Audubon, Reston on Sunday. Water temperature was 73° Fahrenheit and the ambient air temperature was just right for the 1 and 2 mile swims.
