"I think that all veterans feel like they're the lucky ones. That for us is really about Memorial Day and remembering those that didn't come home."

Brett VanderPlaats, Data Solutions Architect/Engineer at DMI, was inspired by an older cousin to join the Navy. He also cited an early leader he had in his Navy days as teaching him about leadership stating that, "Chief Rodriquez could manage people without having to rely or be led in traditional militaristic and autocratic style, with ability to have others work with him whether they were subordinate or senior."

Brett added that he is committed to ensuring that veterans are included in the workplace. He organized lunches for veterans to come together at a previous employer.

"It was very positive for those of us who had served or were even still serving in the reserves to have that connection." He emphasized that it's critical not to put veterans on a pedestal, adding that sometimes it's hard for veterans to accept a comment thanking them for their service when they know someone who has served longer or sacrificed their life for their country, and sometimes those soldiers who made that sacrifice stood to the left and right of us. "Often, a quiet, personal thank you is always very welcomed over a public one."

Try this:
-Visualize mentally placing work-related stressors in a "work box" and home-related stressors in a "home box."
-Focus on one "box" at a time, giving it your full attention without letting the other intrude.
-Be sure to take breaks, breathe deeply, and practice mindfulness to help maintain the boundaries between these compartments.

Tamara Jones, Agile Coach at DMI and veteran of the U.S. Air Force was inspired by the camaraderie she saw between her father and his airmen. When she was nine years old, she decided she wanted to follow in his footsteps.

Tamara is passionate about veterans being able to stay informed about & access their healthcare benefits and about women in the military being recognized for their contributions.

"I'm very adamant about women in the military being taken seriously and given the same opportunities."

Tamara highlighted the importance of being open and understanding of veterans' mental health to ensure their inclusion in the workplace. She added that what might be a big deal to one person may not be to another.

"It's important to understand that every veteran is different, just like every non-veteran. Focus on the individual, respect their needs and wants, and understand them as human beings."

As Senior Assistant at DMI, I bring an unwavering commitment to DMI’s vision and a passion for facilitating success. In my role, I provide administrative, analytical and project support to the National Security & Critical Infrastructure leadership team, in addition to coordinating IT asset and inventory support for employees servicing a DMI client. I keep the wheels turning to ensure the vertical has the freedom to focus on strategy, program growth and innovation.

Remote and flexible work is exciting! Prior to the pandemic, administrative professionals were not widely granted the opportunity to work remotely. The role was seen as traditionally performed in an office but has evolved with the advent of remote work. Flexibility in work settings has gained prominence and administrative professionals have done a fantastic job demonstrating they can successfully perform their roles from anywhere and thrive.

I am also excited about advances in digital transformation like cybersecurity and data protection. Administrative professionals are often tasked with safeguarding sensitive and confidential data. Staying updated on security practices to protect data is crucial.

𝐃𝐌𝐈’𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐬 “𝐃𝐨 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞." 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐃𝐌𝐈𝐞𝐫?
To me, "Do More" means to stop at nothing short of excellence! It's a mindset that says go the extra mile and don’t settle for less. When I work with my DMI client, I seek out opportunities to contribute beyond what is expected and do my best to anticipate issues and address them before they become a problem. Sometimes this means taking on more tasks, working late, or performing additional research outside of my job description -- whatever is necessary to achieve the needed results.

I remember helping one client develop a solution that connects elderly people to medical providers who can provide care at their home. It was wonderful to work on such a project.

ABID 2024 will take place May 13-15, 2024, at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center. This year, keynotes and breakout sessions from government and industry leaders will focus on the theme “Digital Modernization, Unified Operations & Data Dominance through Agile Acquisition.”

Peter brings over two decades of experience in healthcare and life sciences, having worked at organizations such as MEDITECH, GE Healthcare, Allscripts, Intersystems, J2 Consulting, and Infor. He has supported the delivery of clinical solutions, tech services, EMR platforms, and interoperability services – all while consistently maintaining a patient-centric and customer focus.

One example of helping clients overcome challenges, solve problems and achieve business objectives has been active listening. In my experience, when DMI takes over an unhappy or disappointed client, the first thing we do is listen intently and address every concern the client has. This builds confidence from day one and sets the foundational success tone for the rest of the project.
