Are you looking for a unique and fun way to celebrate Mother's Day this year? Look no further than the Medford Senior Center's Mother's Day Tea!

Join us on Friday, May 12th at 1:30pm for an afternoon filled with laughter, stories, and Victorian charm. Our hostess, Rita Parisi, will be portraying Mrs. Michael Gordon, a woman from 1908, and she'll be sharing all sorts of fascinating insights into life during that time period. From fashion and entertainment to transportation and more, you'll get a glimpse into what life was like over 100 years ago.

But this isn't just a lecture - audience participation is encouraged! We invite you to don your finest hats, gloves, and Victorian garb to really get into the spirit of the occasion. And of course, there will be plenty of tea and treats to enjoy while you sit back and relax.

To reserve your spot at this special event, simply call 781-396-6010. And thanks to a generous grant from the Medford Cultural Council, this program is accessible to all.

So why not treat yourself or a special woman in your life to a memorable Mother's Day? We hope to see you there!

We are so excited to announce our 2023 Grant Recipients! Go to https://www.medfordartscouncil.org/2023-grant-recipients to see the full list of grantees.

Last year saw a resurgence of connection. Community members craved socialization beyond the confines of their homes. They wanted exploration and genuine in-person conversations. Local artists highlighted this need for connection in their creative works. The Medford Arts Council received a high-volume of applications for the 2023 calendar year and awarded 53 projects, totaling over $100,000 in funds. We are excited to announce the grants that will allow residents to engage, explore, and connect with the community at large.

The Medford Arts Council is proud to continue our support of the city’s cultural traditions such as CACHE’s Circle the Square and Mystic River Celebration as well as the West Medford Open Studios and the musical performances at the Medford Farmers Market. We are eager to provide $5,000 in funding to the new Community Arts Center led by the Arts Collaborative Medford. Through a $2,000 grant, the city will host the inaugural Medford Porchfest. The Council also helped fund “ASL Tours of the Royall House and Slave Quarters”, the “At Home in Medford” project that is focused on bringing theatre home to adults, the “Needle Felting Workshops For Teens” at the library, and “Dance and Cake: A Community Movement project.”

The ongoing global pandemic requires that we continue to be flexible and supportive of our most vulnerable. We continue to support virtual projects such as the “Just A Minute Festival” in which community members become filmmakers with just a camera phone. We also remain focused on our older community members with the “Original Trivia Game Show For Seniors” and the “Educational Music Series For Seniors.”

A full list of grant recipients can be found at: https://www.medfordartscouncil.org/2023-grant-recipients

Established in 1980, the Medford Arts Council is a city-appointed commission of volunteers dedicated to bringing high-quality cultural programming to the community. The funds we distribute are an annual allocation from the Massachusetts Cultural Council through their local Cultural Council (LCC) program. The Council also receives funding from the City of Medford.

In 2000, West Medford Open Studios (WMOS) began as an annual two-day arts festival located in art studios and host homes in West Medford, MA. During the pandemic the event was shortened to one day and moved outside to Dugger Park. Due to the ongoing success of this new format, WMOS will again occur at Dugger Park with the welcome addition of live music, food trucks and a beer garden.

West Medford has a vibrant and established arts community and in 2022 over 90 artists participated in the event. Among our artists we have painters, photographers, sculptors, writers, jewelers, and musicians. Free events include readings and live music performances. WMOS is one of the few walkable Boston-area open studios, with plenty of free parking and easy access to the commuter rail and bus lines. Please visit us this summer!
