Current Patient: Common Loon

Our Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital has received multiple Common Loons after they were found grounded following the recent ice storm. During his intake examination, our Wildlife Rehabilitators found this loon to be VERY feisty, slightly dehydrated, with abrasions and bruising on his feet. He was started on supportive care and treatment of his wounds, and we are hoping for a great outcome! Loon species are not suited to walk on land because their legs are situated much further back on their body than other birds who are frequently on land.
However, their leg placement makes them exceptional swimmers! They usually only come onto land for mating and nesting purposes. Loons are not able to fly from the ground, but instead need up to a quarter of a mile of open water to take off!

After storms, loons may see the shine of ice or wetness on parking lots and roads and mistake them for a water surface. Once they land, they become stranded which can lead to starvation, dehydration, and pressure wounds. This is likely what happened to this Common Loon that is in our care. Special care is taken in Wildlife Rehabilitation for birds like loons who cannot stand on land so that they do not develop more pressure wounds during their treatment. As the picture shows, he is resting on a raised net to protect his feet and breastbone.

When handling a loon for transport, please wear heavy gloves and eye protection. They have large, sharp beaks that are excellent at spearing things. Loons are large and powerful birds! Always keep control of their head while handling to transfer them into a box for transport to the closest Wildlife Rehabilitator.
