Just to say "Happy Friday" from Medford Florist.
We trust all the Moms had a delightful day yesterday, Mother's Day.
If you received flowers ordered from Medford Florist or any other florist or source, your flowers will benefit from some simple care. Medford Florist includes care information with all our cut-flower designs: follow them for your own delight. In summary, the best way to care for cut flowers is:
- change the water frequently - preferably daily or at least once every 2 days. When changing the water rinse the vase at the very least; use water that is not too cool; mix a few drops of household bleach into the new water in the vase - the bleach slows the growth of bacteria in the water. Bacteria will build up on the cut stems and eventually cover the "wound" ( cut ) at the end of the stem, so stopping the stems from drinking water;
- place the flowers in the vase out of direct sunlight and in a cool location as possible. Cut tropical flowers enjoy a temperature around 55F and also other cut flowers 34-38F... so the cooler, the better. At night, if possible, perhaps place the flowers in the garage which is usually cooler than the house;
- keep flowers out of drafts, be they hot or cool - placing in front or or close to air ducts is not a good idea.
That's it: in less than 5 minutes a day, you will in all probability extend the blooming life of your flowers, whether from us, your garden, another florist or wherever.

Mother's Day is approaching - this Sunday, May 12th. -and, once more, Zinc Cafe have ordered a floral design for the occasion. The design is pictured and contains Jules Elie Peony, Festiva Maxima Peony, Red Sarah Bernhardt Peony - actually more of a "hot pink" - white Viburnum and variegated Weigela with foliage of Solomon's Seal, Cocculus and variegated Pittosporum. As ever, book early at Zinc for reservations, particularly the Sunday Brunch this Mother's Day - you know you ought to spoil Mom... and don't forget the flowers!
Back by popular demand are our Miniature Gardenscapes, as seen in the right-hand-side of the image. These are 8" and 10" diameter metal planters with miniature indoor gardens. Each is different in terms of the foliage plants and the decorations... some have toadstools, picket fences and more while others may have a bench and table with a wheelbarrow or bicycle. On the left of the picture is a glass terrarium of some foliage plants and presented almost as a late- Victorian metal birdcage: a charming way to place and high-light your terrarium! Available while stocks last and both make delightful gifts for Mother's Day... or any occasion!
Posting a care tip here: we do recommend for plants that any water you use for watering is left for a few hours - over-night is ideal - to allow the chlorine and fluoride in tap water to evaporate. Fluoride is inorganic salt ( simply put ) and chlorine is also salt based. Many plants in particular will perform better with less salt-related elements in the water and so the recommendation to let water stand. Plants are more likely to thrive if you do this.

Once more, a kind order from Zinc Cafe, Medford, for a floral design for Valentine'Day, 2024.... yes, it is only a few days away ( gentlemen ) on Wednesday the 14th.
This design includes red Anthurium, Hydraganea, Rose and pink Protea, Lily and Ginestra with Carolina Sapphire, Oregonia and Robellini foliage. The design is 36" + wide.

Wishing everyone Season's Greetings and a Merry Christmas. If you received a floral design, do remember, it needs a little love and holiday cheer as well! If it is a design using floral foam - such as a centerpiece - add water daily ( over an area where any spillage can be wiped up quickly and easily ). If in a vase, freshen the water - preferably daily - and snip the flower stems. Adding a couple of drops of household bleach to the water helps fight off bacteria that can accumulated ... your flowers will thank you!
Another Christmas season, another kind order from Zinc Cafe. This the design features red Amaryllis in various stage of opening, Explorer red Rose, Rose Hip, "golden" Ilex & Eucalyptus, among a bed of seasonal foliage including Carolina Sapphire, Port Orford Cedar & Noble Fir.
If you haven't visited and eaten at Zinc Cafe recently, do go this holiday season - make a reservation!
The Christmas count-down is now well under way! Book floral requirements early, and remember, designs with winter foliage if kept watered and at no more than room temperature not only smells great ( especially in the morning ) but will last now into the New Year.
The pictured design featured, Rose, Genistra, Hydrangea, Port Orford Cedar, Carolina Sapphire, Balsam and Noble Fir.
Our hand-made Christmas "tree", made at Medford Florist, 38, S. Main Street, using Carolina Sapphire, Oregonia, Boxwood, Port Orford Cedarand Rose hips, trimmed with natural pine cones but not so real - for understandable reasons! - male Cardinals!
Be careful but many of these"trees" you see at supermarkets or even some florists, are not made by them but in some warehouse, invariably hundreds of miles away. These have travelled some distance and are not particularly fresh and made to a specific design. Rest assured, ours are made at 38, S. Main Street, Medford, and each slightly different and take some time to make - but we love doing them.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all from all at Medford Florist .
