Ayurvedic Treatments. This is my clients whole spine basti treatment so we covered his spine in a pool of medicated herbal oil that was kept warm for a half hour following stimulation of marma energy points to relax the back. So calming and nourishing. First time I did a couple of these this week, it was fun. Of course he loved it! I’ll be adding this to my menu of bastis for different body areas soon.

Kati Basti! It’s one of if not my favorite Ayurvedic therapy to both give and receive. It’s not just for lower backs. If you have trouble grounding, relaxing or meditating, you will probably LOVE this experience. The warm herbal oil kept in a pool over the low back is very grounding and calming to Vata and the mind and nerves. i am seeing amazing results with sciatica and back pain and disc problems too.

Cupping! Cupping can be amazing for getting the blood and lymph moving as well stretching the fascia connective tissue. If you have tense and tight muscles and fascia, you may love cupping. Cupping can be added to any massage!

New treatments for back pain, degeneration, inflammation. Kati Basti is very nourishing especially for the depleted or high strung types. Warm oil is kept in a dough ring on the low back. This herbally medicated oil penetrates deeply through the skin and into the muscle, tendons, ligament, connective tissue, joints and bones. It also nourishes energy points in the body, providing a deep and grounding sense of calm. This is surprisingly relaxing.
Bastis can also be done over the neck@and other spinal areas, as well as the knees, navel and heart center.

I had the great pleasure to receive Nabhi Basti, which is a treatment over the navel. The Navel is also the area of Nabhi Marma, from where all of the 72,000 Nadis or subtle energy channels of the body emanate.
I become instantly deeply relaxed with the External Bastis. A Dough ring or dam is placed on a specific area of the body and then a bath warm herbal oil is applied and rotated to keep it warm. This is so nourishing to muscles, nerves, tendons and also energy points (marmas) and energy centers (chakras). They help to pacify the doshas, especially Vata, which leads to a deep quieting calming and grounding. They also really support the mind since they are so soothing to the nervous system and the subtle energy body.
In the Nabhi Basti treatment I received, I felt incredibly calm instantly, very deeply relaxed. After the treatment I noticed a subtle energy of warmth flowing from my navel area down my lower abdomen, pelvis and thighs. It kept flowing and feeling warm for hours and later that evening having my soup, my mind felt so peaceful and mindless really. I just sat there is silent bliss with no movement of the mind for an hour and felt like I could have sat there is bliss for several hours. It was so nice! I did sleep well that night too.
This basti is also very soothing for digestion, which is why it is often used. I’ve noticed that everyone seems to have a unique experience as the medicine gently goes where it is most needed.

Massage Therapy and acute illness (colds, flus, covid etc):
I want my clients to know that Massage Therapy is contraindicated while feeling sick and until minimum 24 hours after feeling well. You will feel WORSE if you have a massage before your body is completely recovered. This is because massage therapy powerfully moving lymph which is healing and detoxifying, however while recovering from illness the body has viruses it is trying to clear in its lymph nodes. We do not want to spread this around or overload the system. I know you probably feel achey and think a massage sounds great, but trust me on this and and wait until *minimum* 24 hours until you are fully over the acute illness, respiratory symptoms and your energy has come back. You will be glad you did.

If you are up in smoke like us here in Rogue valley, here are a couple of my favorite smoke protection tricks. Share yours if you have some good ones!
Of course wear a respirator if you have to go out, I wear it even in the car when it’s bad. It helps a lot along with hepa filter. Prevent the nasty headaches etc!
Do a cold infusion of marshmallow root or use some demulcent herb to moisten and lubricate the mucus membranes every day. I’m preparing mine now. You just soak some marshmallow root powder in water for a couple of hours or even overnight and drink. Shatavari and licorice are also nice and you can make a tea and drink all of these as a tea too. The more moistened/ lubricated the membranes are, it can help create some protection from the particles and hopefully help the body expell them easier.
I put some oil on the pinky and lubricate the nasal passages before going outside if I have to go out for work etc. Or put a drop or two of oil in the nose. Sesame, olive, ghee or coconut will do. Nasya- it helps protect the linings and cleanse the passages. I like to do a neti pot rinse and facial steam inhalation from a pot after I come in if I was out driving to work etc.
I will do some breathing excercises when I get into clean air to help the body cleanse and get some prana going.
Stay very well hydrated, eat healthy (plenty of fruits and veggies) and light and get good rest.
Those are what helps me the most to manage when conditions are temporarily quite smokey🙏
The “issues in our tissues”. The body holds cellular memory of past experiences frozen inside the body. These stuck energies block the free flow of energy in our body. Somatic based therapies including massage and also somatic emotional clearing and energy work can help free this stuck energy by bringing us back into presence with these parts of our bodies.

Keep practicing deep belly breathing in between massages to feel more calm. And of course during massage therapy sessions too! Take a few deep inhalations into your abdomen and ribcage and then long and slow exhales. You have time to breathe!
In between massages if you need some deep relaxation and deep healing, try yoga nidra! This practice is so healing and all you need to do is lie down and push play. There are many you tube guided practices.
