The Somerville Education Foundation is looking for COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS for their third annual fundraising campaign for summer learning scholarships for Somerville children. They are looking to close the opportunity gap for their kids. Some kids have access to their local high-quality enrichment programs that specialize in STEM, theater arts, media production, parkour and more but others don't, as families cannot afford the weekly fees for these programs. Their summer learning campaign helps their local camps to enroll children despite their financial circumstances. We know the importance of summer enrichment experiences! Check out their website for more information. Volunteer with them and you’ll gain experience in community fundraising and meet great people! A request to you, our incredible friends, supporters, and volunteers:
The Leonard Carmichael Society (LCS) has had the incredible opportunity to serve our community for the past 60 years. Ask anyone involved and they will say how much LCS has meant to their Tufts experience and how much LCS has impacted the Greater Boston community!
Our 30+ groups rely on the LCS Vans to carry out their service and without them, would not be able to reach multiple areas that require our services and would essentially require all members to use out-of-pocket funds to pay for transportation.
We are asking for any donation, whatever amount you are comfortable, to the fundraiser for a NEW LCS van! The impact of your donation would help 1000's of students complete their service!!

Micro-Meltdown: The Inside Story of the Rise, Fall, and Resurgence of the World’s Most Valuable Microlender
Tuesday, November 27 | 6 PM | 7th Floor, Cabot Center
Join them for a conversation with Vikram Akula, A90, a pioneer in market-based approaches to financial inclusion and founder of SKS Microfinance. Akula will discuss his book, Micro-Meltdown: The Inside Story of the Rise, Fall and Resurgence of the World’s Most Valuable Microlender, which details how he founded SKS to improve the lives of India’s poor through small loans aimed at providing a path out of poverty. A unique, for-profit venture, SKS’ impact grew rapidly as did its success. The company was praised for blending philanthropy and capitalism, and Akula was named one of the most influential people in the world by the Wall Street Journal and TIME magazine. Later, as microfinance came under fire in India and around the world, SKS experienced first-hand the costs of what was once heralded as a key solution to global poverty. Micro-Meltdown is the story of SKS’ oversights, challenges and obstacles that led to disaster, the eventual resurgence of the microfinance movement, and the lessons learned in between. Reception and refreshments to follow the book talk.
Akula is now Chairperson of Vaya, a financial inclusion start up in India, and founder of the Bodhi School, which provides education to disadvantaged children in rural India. He is a senior fellow at the Fletcher School’s Council on Emerging Market Enterprises and a member of the Tisch College Board of Advisors. This event is cosponsored by the Tufts Entrepreneurship Center and the Fletcher School’s Institute for Business in the Global Context.

The Tufts with Rwanda Fellowship is a yearlong program that is centered on genocide education, building international relationships, and empowering participants to become global ambassadors for their community. The fellowship has several components including a highly subsidized trip to Rwanda and a second semester course through the Ex-College.
Fellows will enroll in this course during the spring before they go on the trip in order to help establish group connections, cover background information on the 1994 Rwandan genocide, participate in diversity trainings, and do general preparation for the trip.
The trip to Rwanda provides an in-depth look at the Rwandan genocide that began in April of 1994, and the processes of reconciliation that continue to this day. In Rwanda, fellows will visit genocide memorials and learn about Rwanda's history and culture. The group will stay at Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village where they will spend time with ASYV students. The group will have discussions to deconstruct relevant topics and will participate in student activities at ASYV that allow the fellows to learn more about Rwandan culture and form relationships with the students.
The goal is to look for positive ways, beginning with self-education, to become global ambassadors representing our own community abroad. They will use what we learn from this fellowship to ignite action within our own community in the hopes of fighting and eventually ending mass atrocities.
Applications will be released online starting November 7th after the ASYV at Tufts: Lunch and Learn event at 12PM in Tufts Hillel. This event will feature the Director of ASYV, Jean-Claude Nkulikiyimfura and a current Tufts student who is an ASYV alumni. Both will talk more about what ASYV is, and also Tufts’ relationship to the youth village. If you are interested in learning more about the fellowship and the application process come join us on Wednesday, or visit our page,https://www.facebook.com/tuftswithrwanda/.
