Are you getting adequate fiber?
Many people are unaware that the lack of fiber in their diet can be as harmful to their gut as consuming foods high in sugar and processed foods. It is recommended to consume 25 to 30 grams of fiber daily. Unfortunately, the average American adult only consumes about 15 grams of dietary fiber daily, which is only half the recommended amount. Below are a few ways lack of fiber intake negatively impacts the gut:
✅Starves the microbiome: The good bugs in the gut thrive on fiber. Fiber is their food and primary fuel source, and without it, they cannot survive.
✅Weakens gut lining: When the good bugs don’t have fiber, they either die or start eating away at the gut lining, which allows toxins to seep into the system, leading to further health complications.
✅Overgrowth of pathogens: More pathogenic and harmful bacteria flourish when beneficial bacteria do not get proper nutrients to live. This prolonged overgrowth of pathogens in the gut is the root of countless illnesses.
✅Impairs digestion: You need fiber to digest fiber! The beneficial gut bacteria help break down certain fibers so they can be more easily absorbed into the system. When diets lack fiber over time, it can become more challenging to incorporate fiber back into the diet.
To help get more fiber into your routine, try adding at least one source of fiber with each meal. Also try incorporating different forms of fiber from veggies to beans and grains like wild rice. If the gut has a hard time digesting fiber, you might start with more blended soups and supplementing with a digestive enzyme, this makes it much easier for the gut to digest.

The gut should always be the first place to start when thinking about maintaining optimal health. However, if you’re curious about whether or not you have underlying gut issues to heal, here are a few signs you may want to look for:
✅Digestive issues: Digestive discomfort especially after meals as well as bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and an inability to digest foods can indicate a compromised gut. A great place to start is by supplementing with a digestive enzyme like my go-to No Bloat from to help break down foods while incorporating more easy-to-digest foods like blended soups.
✅Nutrient Deficiencies: Your body absorbs nutrients from foods through the gut lining. It’s not always that your body isn’t getting enough nutrients, rather, when the gut lining is compromised (aka leaky gut), foods are not properly absorbed which can lead to nutrient deficiencies.
✅Food Cravings: Cravings for unhealthy foods like sugar and even starchy carbs like noodles and bread could potentially be the pathogens in the gut talking (often Candida), telling your brain what they need to eat. Generally, if you work towards feeding the good bacteria by reducing processed foods and consuming more fiber, your cravings may subside.
✅Chronic Infections & Illness: Nearly the entire immune system resides in the gut so taking a daily probiotic to populate the gut with beneficial organisms, adding in more fiber to feed the good bugs, as well as drinking plenty of water throughout the day and reducing processed foods and sugar (this feeds the pathogens) can all help to strengthen the gut and boost the immune system.
✅Food Sensitivities: Often sensitivities stem from a permeable gut lining, allowing foods to seep into the system where the body recognizes it as foreign and attacks. Generally, once we heal the gut lining, we can reverse many of these food sensitivities.
