This about sums up how I feel around this time a year with how busy we are. How is everyone else holding up?! I think we're down to 7 weeks before Christmas. Are you ready? (I am definitely NOT lol)

And I know, long time, no post. I have tons of images to organize and not enough time. I'm mapping out plans for 2024 however - so if you're wanting a family session, and you're looking for something more than a typical posed shoot, I'd love to work with you!

I love toddler agendas. Today, she decided that the play kitchen needed to move to the back patio. So armful by armful, she brought out all of the accessories. And then of course her favorite “climbs” (foam mat and climbing bits) had to join the party. 😆

I had the honor of doing a Day in the Life session for Camila’s family, and she also owns Green Bee Ceramics!! It was so fun to watch her at work, very much “at home” at the pottery wheel. If you are thinking about picking up some planters, or maybe need a new coffee mug—check out her stuff! 😍❤️

Quiet heaps underneath.
The tumbled mountains
In a brew left from twigs, sand, and sinews.
Flowing, slithering down valleys.
Rest the sleepy globs,
Cradled in sacred, secret pockets.
Processing in the still, dark, heavy, cold. Steeped slow.

Feet stepped in,
Hands scoop and gather.
Visceral rolling and folding.
Pressed into spheres.

Maker who sits and waits, breath upon breath.
Channels from beyond.
Gravity, spins, pushes
Revolves in concentric spirals. Pulse. Repeat.

Centered and still.
Potential that wills
To be opened, pulled
Ring upon ring
Guiding shapely forms
With the slightest fingertips.

By the sill, blows dry, soft waves of air.
Forged in heat.
Glaze flows down. A regal garment for the
Mature, steady, stone.

Functions in grace.
To hold, give, nourish, pour, uplift.
To be of service. Perfectly imperfect.

Deeper Documentary Images | Winter 2022 03/31/2022

Just finished up a 12 week course with Chuck Anerino on Creating Deeper Documentary Images!! Such a great course, I really feel like I’ve grown, and I can’t wait to continue practicing the concepts we covered. Slideshow below is work from all 12 students—it’s an honor to have been a part of this super talented group of individuals.

I shot my first roll of film in SEVENTEEN YEARS. Once upon a time, I was dedicated film only. I was never going to digital. I was going to have my own darkroom set up, and shoot only film. Then I got my first dslr and I never went back to film. I sold all my film equipment over the years (which I now very much regret) and went full digital. Then a few weeks ago, an old Canon AE1 Program showed up on marketplace 3 minutes from our house, so I went and got it. What a throwback!!! It sounds so crazy when the shutter clicks, and I can’t break the habit of looking at the back of the camera to review the images 😂. Also—I have no idea how anyone focused quick enough to capture moments in time! Practice, I suppose. Anyways—my top 10 from this first roll!!

Taking our heathens to Home Depot—2 bathroom trips, 25 times in and out of the cart, and I don’t even know how many times “put that back!”, “don’t touch that!”, and “stay where we can see you!” were said. 😵‍💫😂

Every week, as some sort of half effort to immerse my kids in something other than screens, we visit the library. We boldly announce our entrance—usually by setting off the door alarm with our past-due loot—then by talking loudly, arguing, laughing, chasing, etc our way through the kids area. Piper can rip books off the shelves WAY faster than I can put them back, Zoey enjoys bringing home an armful of books 5 years above her reading level, which I desperately try to talk her down to taking just one novel, and how about some books closer to your age range? And then Carson is actually pretty good—he’s gotten to where he can read to himself, it’s more a matter of locating and putting the right book on hold for him because they next one in the series is never in stock. (Popular series). He also enjoys watching dvds at night on the Xbox. So much for less screen time. Anyways. Thank you Library and staff for letting us visit and helping us with the thousands of books we’ve checked out over the years!

Last week’s library run 😆.

Piper and her “climbs”. These are by far, her FAVORITE things she owns. She drags them all over the house, arranges them, and climbs on them. They are always in our way, and irritate me half to death, but boy does she love them 😆❤️

Bottle flipping, but with a road cone 😆

Aaaaaand one more, because if I don’t post it now, I’ll forget 😂. These kids are like monkeys. Always hanging, climbing, moving—rarely still. I remember that part of being a kid. I loved hanging upside down. It’s funny how one day, you just kind of lose that. I no longer feel the urge to hang upside down or swing on the monkey bars. So now, I enjoy watching them instead. ❤️

My kids are spoiled with all of the awesome playgrounds here in the Melbourne/Palm Bay Area. I was en route to take them to what *I* consider to be one of the best play grounds in the area, and they said that they have been “too many times” lately and wanted to go somewhere else. Thankfully there was another one right around the corner or they would have just had to deal 😆. Also, we found a scavenger hunt item while we were there!

Zoey ❤️

My kids are pretty easy to spot at the playground—they’re the ones who look like Mowglie from The Jungle Book—tackling the tallest structure that they can claw their way up to. Usually, they’re barefoot, but we have a rare occurrence here where she’s actually wearing shoes.

Halloween! We spent the day carving pumpkins and then getting costumes ready for trick-or-treating! Piper reeaaallly enjoyed the entire holiday, and Carson and Zoey were super sweet helping her with her candy. Also, we made the kids scoop out their own pumpkin guts this year, which I 10/10 recommend 😂🎃

Behind the Scenes: School Portraits today!
It was so much fun to back at school making portraits. The kids are so fun, and I have a great time making a fool of myself trying to get them to laugh 😂😂. I hope they at least enjoyed it, ha, ha!!

I used to think I was a lifestyle photographer.

I was drawn to the more realistic style that lifestyle offered as opposed to having people carefully posed, studio crafted. When I look at examples of lifestyle photography, I see real expressions. I see laughter that sings to the viewer, happiness oozing from the families. Genuine smiles. Golden light.

At that time, lifestyle was the closest thing I had found to a photography passion. But it wasn’t the way I captured my own family, my own children. I didn’t take my kids out to a field and ask them to run around. I didn’t pose or direct them–ever. I couldn’t. My children are wild. They don’t sit, they don’t pose, and the more they know I want to direct them, the less willing they are to work with me. The are full of energy and s***k. So I have had to learn to adapt. I stopped asking them to look at me when I was taking their photo. I got down on their level. I moved around them as they played. Documentary style.

These are the photos that I absolutely love the most. They are real moments, real slices of time that I captured. These are the pictures that show up on our photo slideshow in the kitchen that the kids remember and talk about. The ones that bring me right back to where we were in my memory.

I now know that my passion lies in Documentary Family Photography. Unscripted, unposed. Candid.

These are the photos that spark the light in my soul.
