Incredible photo of America's clandestine Special Force warriors conducting secret mission across the fence, bringing the fight to the enemy!
Military Assistance Command Vietnam-Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG) team inside of Laos.
Paul M. Schuerenberg Jr. (far left in photo) was transferred from the Command and Control Central Hatchet Forces to join Recon Team RT Ohio in 1971.
Activated in 1964, MACV-SOG was a covert joint special operations organization that conducted cross-border operations into Cambodia, Laos Thailand, and North Vietnam.
The unit was an ecclectic group of Army Special Forces operators, Navy SEALs, Recon Marines, and Air Commandos, SOG also worked closely with the Intelligence Community, often running missions at the request of the CIA.SOG commandos, thus, wore no name tags, rank, or any other insignia that might identify them as Americans. Even their weapons had no serial numbers.
During its eight-year secret war (1964-1972), SOG conducted some of the most daring special operations in U.S. history and planted the seed for the creation of the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC).
Photo of MAVCSOG members (Left to right) Paul Schuerenberg, Paul Sheppard, and Walter Shumate.
