Mr. Cochran’s Legacy: Ron Settles and Signal Hill
Ron Settles had a bright future ahead of him when he encountered police officers in Signal Hill, CA while on his way to his part-time job as a student-teacher. Mr. Settles found himself in police custody and after phoning his mother to post bail, was found dead in his cell. The police alleged that he had hanged himself, but Johnnie convinced the family to have his body exhumed and inspected by an independent coroner. The coroner found that Mr. Settles injuries were not, in fact, self-inflicted. The officers had beat him, put him in a choke hold, and killed him. The conference room in The Cochran Firm Memphis office was dedicated to Ron’s memory by Mr. Cochran himself, and today, The Firm works with The Ron Settles Memorial Foundation giving scholarships to young people working towards a degree in law, education, or civil rights work.

This past Monday, June 12th, would have been Ronnie's 64th birthday if not for his untimely death. After our golf tournament this year we were fortunate to attend the opening of the new The Cochran Firm of the Mid-South office, where the Ron Settles Conference room that was dedicated 20 years ago has been moved!
Much like Mr. Cochran, our organization is committed to furthering Ronnie's story and promoting his legacy, and we will continue to empower others to fight injustice.
