Rutledge’s dedication to the community and ability to generate results attracted the attention of elected officials and national organizations. Former Florida Governor Lawton Chiles appointed him to serve on the South Florida Regional Planning Council, and the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners appointed him to serve on the Miami-Dade Black Affairs Advisory Board. Juneteenth holiday is only once a year, mental health equity is a year-round cause. Juneteenth edifies the magnitude for the need for racial equity in mental health care.
Juneteenth was declared a national holiday and is celebrated on June 19th to honor the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.
On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, approximately 2,000 troops arrived, and announced the freedom of more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas.
Prior to this day, some African-Americans remained enslaved despite the Emancipation Proclamation, which was passed in 1863 to free slaves in the U.S. In places still under Confederate control - which included Galveston, Texas - many people remained enslaved until the end of the Civil War.
NAMI Miami-Dade County celebrated Juneteenth "Freedom Day" on Friday, June 16th through its Black and Underserved Communities Initiative event, "NAMI Miami-Dade C.A.R.E.S. Through COMPASSION / COMMUNICATION, ACKNOWLEDGMENT, RESILIENCE / RESPECT, EDUCATION / EMPOWERMENT, and more importantly SUPPORT, NAMI Miami-Dade County C.A.R.E.S. or the mental health of all.
Thank you for this special invitation, and opportunity to learn more about such an important part of the black community history in Miami-Dade!
Let the countdown begin 🌴🌴
