December 30, 2023 I received a DM from Spike Lee inquiring about my painting of him. I was over the moon that this legend reached out to me for my painting! I mean, I hadn’t been painting a year yet. I was so excited and proud. Time went past and things went silent. Meanwhile several friends sent me the post with the Freedom Awards honorees and guess who was one of them? Yep, Mr Lee! Fast forward to June after a few more conversations the acquisition was finalized. Yes 6 months later! Next, my friends! My friends! They moved mountains to make sure I got the chance to meet Mr Lee. Nikki, I love you. Kim, I love you!

Lesson 1: You are good enough! Even in the beginning stages.
Lesson 2: Don’t get hung up on how long it takes. Nothing can change what’s for you. Not even time!
Lesson 3: surround yourself with people who will move the mountains to get you in front of the right people. Friends that don’t mind propping you up for YOU to shine.

I’m forever grateful and blessed to be able to create legendary work for legendary people. It was amazing!

My Sister said something to me the other day and it made me realize how many lives I’ve lived so far. She said I’ve seen you as a writer, poet, spoken word artist, actress, photographer, and now an artist. Putting that in perspective unlocked something in me. The realization that in a short 46 years I have been carving out a creative path that I’m proud of. Hell, inspired by! I’m not done by any means.
