128 days sounds like a long time but it'll go by fast!

If you're looking for the perfect gift to give the person who has everything this is it! Transfer their old home movies to a digital format that can be watched on any screen!

Most of the reels we transfer are in pretty good shape, however, every now and then we get some reels that are in bad shape.

The 8mm film in the reel on the left is what you want to see when you take it out of it's cannister. The film unrolls if you let and you and you can feel the rolled film separate with your fingers. The 8mm film in the reel on the right is what you do not want to see. It has curled, become brittle, and is stuck together. If this photo was scratch-n-sniff you'd smell vinegar, which means, at the very least, the film has begun to deteriorate. The reel on the left can easily be transferred and the reel on the right can't be salvaged. It is unfortunate because the video and memories on the right reel are lost forever.

If your film smells like vinegar but isn't curled or stuck together your film can likely still be transferred. You just need to get it to us as soon as possible! This is the result of a condition called "vinegar syndrome" and once it starts it can't be stopped. It is also "contagious" and can affect other reels that are in good shape.

Remember, once the video has been transferred you won't have to worry about the reels deteriorating ever again!

Gemini Multimedia has been transferring home movies and other media to digital formats since 2006. Back then the preferred media to transfer two was a DVD. Most people had DVD players in their homes and it was easier to just "pop" a DVD in the player and watch your favorite home movie. That's no longer the case. With the advent of streaming media and smart TVs many have opted for a completely wireless menu driven experience over physical media. If you think about it, when was the last time you visited a friend and noticed a DVD player in their home? It's likely been a while.

As a result of that we've moved to transferring to digital files only. You will receive a link that is good for two weeks so you can download your transferred media to a hard drive, USB drive, or the "cloud". You will also receive a private Youtube playlist that will enable you to easily watch your videos on your phone, computer, or smart TV. Our reasons for going all digital are both convenient and practical and they're listed below.

1. Your videos will be easier to watch
As stated above, you will have a private Youtube playlist to watch on your phone, tablet, computer, or smart TV. If you're looking for something to do while sitting in a waiting room just pop in some ear buds and watch your movies. If you're celebrating a holiday with family just stream it to their smart TV.

2. Ridiculously easy to share
The Youtube playlist will come with a link. Anyone you send the link to will be able to see the videos. What's great about the private playlist is no one will be able to see your videos unless you give them access. If there's a video your Aunt Jane who lives 500 miles away would love to see you can either send her the link to the entire playlist or a link to the individual video you want her to see. You will generally begin having access to videos we transfer within 24 hours.

3. The ability to play physical media doesn't last forever
When I talk to people who have 8mm reels from the 1970s they begin to panic when they think about how their reels will one day go bad. More often than not their reels are fine. The main issue is having the ability to play the reels. With a digital file you will never have to worry about that again unless there's some kind of apocalypse to prevent you from doing so. The videos will be on Youtube until there is no longer a Youtube. That idea might be possible, but it certainly isn't probable. You'll be able to play your digital files as long as you want.

4. The physical media won't last forever
The main reason you can't play your old physical media is because the machines simply aren't readily available. However, the media can succumb to the effects of time and poor storage conditions. The original quality of the tape can come into play, too. Even if you've had your media converted to DVDs you're in danger. The burnable DVDs used in most transfer processes may last you 10 years, and that's in ideal storage conditions. Aside from the deterioration of the original media, the media can get lost. Once that happens your memories are likely gone forever.

I transfer a lot of tapes. I know how to store them so they last a long time. I digitized a bunch a long time ago so I wouldn't have to worry about losing them or the tapes going bad or even losing the ability to play them. However, that wasn't always the case.

A couple of days ago I found about 25 tapes in my ATTIC! (ANDe gasps out of the sheer horror of that thought) They were obviously put there before I knew better, so around 2005. They have endured the extreme hot and cold of Memphis ridiculous weather and a new roof which covered them with shingle dust. I almost had a panic attack!

Fortunately they are ok and playable and wow...I LOVE looking at them and this is the reason I started a business years ago to transfer old home movie media to DVDs and other digital formats.
