Rooted in the tradition of the Gospels and inspired by the vision and passion of Dorothy Day, the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality provides temporary housing and support services for homeless families in Memphis, TN. Working with other local agencies, staff members and volunteers provide families in need with a safe environment and the means to re-establish their independence.
We would like to give a big THANK YOU and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to DDH supporter Mistie Serrano! To celebrate her birthday, she put together these gift bags for our families by collecting items. Contributions were made by her, her family, coworkers, and friends. Every person at our houses received a treat bag with necessities and goodies, plus other needed supplies were given such as clothes, diapers and wipes.π
Thank you for your generous donation, Mistie and we hope that you had a wonderful birthday! πβ€

KIDS CAN DO ANYTHING!!! We would like to give a shoutout to some of the most darling in-kind donors we've had! These kids are with the Goodman Oaks Church of Christ VBS (Southaven, MS) and Sunday School Kids Worship and they collected over 500 toiletries and cleaning supplies for our families here at Dorothy Day House. We are so grateful for their contributions and our residents will use them every day. This just proves once again that you can care about your community at any age!! Way to be, kids!!! β€

Looking for an interesting way to help out the Dorothy Day House? Between now and August 31st, Delaware North is featuring us as the charitable recipient of their Game Changer campaign at the Southland Casino Hotel in West Memphis! The campaign involves casino patrons gifting the change thatβs left on their slot vouchers and racing tickets by dropping them or the change off at wishing wells and large ticket barrels throughout the casino. All the change gifted goes to DDH this summer, and we couldn't be more thankful. It's a great way to make a difference while having fun! ππ

There's a ton of super great deals on Amazon today and we hope that you can help us out just a little with some of our most pressing needs. We are looking to stock up on some items for our offices, but we also still need laundry soap and baby formula, as well as a few other crucial items for our families.
If you would rather shop locally, we also welcome that. Just please reach out to our Donations Coordinator, Aileen by emailing her at [email protected] so you can coordinate a drop off time at our office at 321 S. Bellevue Blvd.

It's Wishlist Wednesday a day early, friends! Don't worry, we will be back again tomorrow, but we just thought it would be a wise move to take advantage of Prime Days on Amazon. If you happen to be a Prime member, you can take advantage of discounts on the site to maximize your giving!
This week, we are focusing our efforts on making our offices complete. We are in need of a wide variety of things to transform our workspaces and assist our families with their needs, everything from Command Strips to a ladder to car battery chargers. We still also have lingering needs from over the past few weeks for our families too, so if you would rather purchase those, they're still on the wishlist too. The Wishlist link can be found below.
As always, we are incredibly grateful for every last share, donation, like, and love. Without our community, we wouldn't be able to do what we do and we thank you! β€π
π£π£Big DDH shoutoutπ£π£ to this kind, fun, and enthusiastic group of youngsters and their chaperones from The River Church in Marion, Indiana who came to volunteer with us at our office. They came on a service mission trip to Memphis and volunteered at various spots around town that help people experiencing houselessness last week, including the Dorothy Day House office. They were such a big help, scraping wallpaper in our kitchen to prep it for painting, cleaning blinds, mowing the yard, blowing and raking leaves, and pressure washing the sides of the building to make it sparkle! We are so grateful for their hard work and their commitment to service. The Dorothy Day House and Memphis community thank you for being driven to make the world a better place. We wish you a safe journey back home! πππ

The houses are all full right now, which means we have a lot of dishes and laundry to do! As such, our highest needs this week are laundry detergent and dish soap. We also are in need of a very specific baby formula for one of our tiny residents - Similac Total Care Sensitive Baby Formula Powder.

β'After all,' I used to tell him, 'we drink milk from the breast of our mother. We are nourished while we are in the womb by the blood of her heart. From her flesh and from her blood we grow before we enter into this life, and so from the Body and Blood of Jesus we are nourished for life eternal.' We are shriven and we are nourished, and my gratitude for this tremendous gift only grows greater with the years."

βChristian philosophy of work was this. God is our creator. God made us in His image and likeness. Therefore we are creators. He gave us a garden to till and cultivate. We become co-creators by our responsible acts, whether in bringing forth children, or producing food, furniture or clothing. The joy of creativeness should be ours.β
