Southern Heritage Classic will be at Liberty Stadium through 2032
By Samuel Hardiman, Daily Memphian
The Southern Heritage Classic will be held at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium through 2032, its management company and founder Fred Jones said Tuesday.
Jones said he is done negotiating with the City of Memphis and University of Memphis, which will soon own Liberty Stadium.
“No further negotiations. Everything is straightforward now. No other issues on my part,” Jones said in a text message to The Daily Memphian.
The announcement from Jones on Tuesday morning is a key step in the U of M owning Liberty Stadium, removing a potential barrier.
Jones’ announcement of nine future dates for the Southern Heritage Classic comes after weeks of negotiations about his game's future. His influence at the Memphis City Council and his concerns about the future of his game prompted hours of negotiations among him, the U of M and the city.
The City Council approved the transfer of the stadium to the U of M along with $120 million in cash on Dec. 19. However, it could have been reconsidered Tuesday and members of the council said it could be if Jones was not satisfied.
That final approval — approving the minutes of the previous meeting — could likely go without a hitch now that Jones is satisfied.
If the minutes from the previous meeting are approved, the U of M will receive Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
Here are the dates for the next nine Southern Heritage Classic games:
• September 14, 2024
• September 13, 2025
• September 12, 2026
• September 11, 2027
• September 9, 2028
• September 8, 2029
• September 14, 2030
• September 13, 2031
• September 11, 2032

'Nat D. Williams Boulevard': Broadcasting pioneer honored with street naming Nat D. Williams — hailed as the first Black radio personality in Memphis and “The Voice of Beale Street” — took to the airwaves in 1948 on WDIA.

Well said!
More about culture than competition, HBCU classics are like a family reunion in the Black community They are a gathering point for fellowship, as well as a means to spotlight and celebrate the rich history tied to historically Black colleges across the United States. The game between Florida A&M and Jackson State earlier this month was proof of that.
