We're not lyin', it's World Lion Day! 🦁👑 Visit today and see our three gorgeous lions, Akeelah, Jamela, and Thabo. These beautiful big cats love to watch over the Nile River and Cat House Cafe and will watch guests pass by their exhibit. Whether it's a restful day on the log or showing off with a powerful roar, they are spectacular to observe. ❤️

IUCN currently lists lions as having a decreasing population, with an estimated population size of ~23,000 in Africa. Some of their biggest threats are habitat loss, illegal trade, and poaching. Last week for National Zookeeper Week, we celebrated our phenomenal Keepers all week long! 🥳 We asked guests to write a thank-you note to our Keepers to let them know how awesome and appreciated they are, and to recognize their hard work and commitment to our animals and our mission. We got so many thank you notes, drawings, and words from guests and shared them with ALL our Keepers in every area! They were very appreciative and loved reading all the notes. ❤️

Like everyone else, we were AMAZED by Simone Biles’ performance for the Women’s Team Final for USA Gymnastics! 🇺🇸 Simone Biles is 4 feet and 8 inches tall, but her total jump height is 12 FEET! That means she can jump as high as one of our giraffes, Wendy! Next time you come and see Wendy, look up and imagine that… 😅🦒

There's a new resident in Zambezi! 🤎🤍 Joining our friend Toby, Sylvester has been out and about exploring (like any okapi, mostly with his tongue). Sylvester was born at the Houston Zoo to his mother Sukari and his father Kwame on April 20th of last year. Because he's so young, you can tell Sylvester and Toby apart due to Sylvester's lack of ossicones, the horn-like structures on okapis' heads. Our awesome team has started to work with him on targeting, being comfortable with tactile and hoof work, and getting on a scale! 😄

Sylvester and Toby could one day play an important role in the okapi Species Survival Plan! This unique animal is native to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa. Okapi are often thought to be related to zebras due to their striped legs. Still, they are most closely related to giraffes and are the only living members of the Giraffidae family, along with giraffes. Okapi are classified as endangered due to habitat loss and poaching, and humans have invaded their habitat in search of the material cobalt. You can help okapis by recycling your old electronics. If you have any, use the drop-off box in Primate Canyon. 📱 🤝

Join us for story time in the bear den! 📖🤣 Before the bear den was filled back in, our keepers and staff had some fun exploring it! 🕳️

While wild bears may dig a den to survive the icy cold winters, our bears have a safe, climate-controlled den inside their night house. Our bears dig for fun, and not to last the winter! When the den starts to become unstable, we collapse it ourselves to make sure they stay safe. 🐻 ❤️

With Netflix’s first look at the final season of Stranger Things, some of our nocturnal animals… visited The Upside Down?! 😧 Needless to say, they’re excited for the new season!

Although patas monkeys are mostly terrestrial, meaning they are ground-dwellers, they sleep in trees at night! 💤 To avoid predators, they will also change which tree they sleep in each night.

Not only can sea lions put on an exciting show, but did you know they're also valuable teammates of the U.S. Navy? 🤯🇺🇸 The Navy's Marine Mammal Program relies on their California sea lions for search, rescue, and retrieval of military hardware!
