What is Forklift Deration?

Think of it like holding a five-pound weight at your chest—easy enough, right? But extend your arms fully, and that same weight suddenly feels heavier, putting more strain on your back and shoulders.

Forklift deration works in a similar way. Every forklift has a specified weight capacity, but that doesn’t mean it can always lift that maximum weight to its highest point. Various factors can lower this capacity, such as:
📏 Length of forks or forklift attachments
📦 Dimensions of load (the center of the load)
↕️ Height to which load is being lifted.

Even with guardrails, falls and tip-overs are a potential safety hazard when it comes to operating scissor lifts. ⚠️

However, with the right precautions, these incidents are preventable:
⚖️ Don't overload the lift's capacity, or keep too much weight to one side of the platform.
〰️ Avoid uneven surfaces.
💨 When operating scissor lifts outside ensure wind speeds are not above 25 mph.
🚫 Do not lean over or stand on top of the guardrails; keep work within easy reach.
🔌 Be careful when using extension cords; do not tie them to rails or place them where they can get snagged or tangled in the equipment.
⚠️ Look out for overhead objects like power lines, pipes, etc.
