Druse (Druzy or Druse) is a coating made up of numerous small mineral crystals. Drusy quartz sparkles in the light like grains of sugar. Many drusy quartz specimens form on the inside of geodes.

The most well-known Greek mythical legend goes that one day, Cupid/Amor, the god of love, used one of his arrows to cut the fingernails of his mother Venus. As her nails fell from Mount Olympus into the sacred Indus river, they metamorphosed into Onyx as they were believed to be divine. In ancient Greek, onyx means the nail of a claw or finger

The name comes from the Greek onux, meaning "nail" or "claw", referring to the mineral's color, and it was used by the Romans for a variety of stones including alabaster, chalcedony, and what is now called onyx marble. The name onyx is properly applied only to the agate variety. Other varieties include Sardonyx, with white and red bands. As with the other chalcedonies, onyx forms from the deposition of silica at low temperatures from silica-rich waters percolating through cracks and fissures in other rocks. Natural onyx comes from India and South America. Onyx is popular for carved cameos and intaglios because its layers can be cut to show a color contrast.

Blue Hemimorphite Tree of Life Pendant

Hemimorphite is a rare mineral and popular collector gemstone found worldwide. The mineral occurs in a range of eye-catching hues. Its purest form is colorless to white, gray, or brown. Rarer colors are yellow to bluish-green and variations of bright blue.

Hemimorphite has been around for ages! In fact, the ancient Roman scholar Pliny the Elder wrote about the mineral in his literature under the name “galmei.”

The stone was named in 1853 by German geologist and mineralogist Adolph Kenngott after its hemimorphic properties.

Sonoran Sunset!

Sonoran Sunset is a multi-color stone composed of blue/green which is Chrysocolla, the red is Cuprite, Chalcotricite, which is the orangey red), and the black is Iron. Sonoran Sunset comes from Cuitata, Municipio de Cananea, Sonora, Mexico.

The original Sonora Sunset material was found at the Milpillas Mine, located about 20 kilometers southeast of the town of Santa Cruz in the state of Sonora, Mexico.

The goal at the Milpillas Mine was the production of copper ore. In their work, mine employees sometimes encountered the material now known as Sonora Sunset and collector-quality specimens of many minerals that include: azurite, chalcocite, chrysocolla, cuprite, goethite, malachite, pyrite and others.

Sonora Sunset is a rare material not seen in mass-production jewelry. Cabochons of the material are usually sold in the lapidary market. They are almost always freeform or uncalibrated pieces, cut to take advantage of colors and patterns present in the rough. Sonora Sunset jewelry is usually produced by designers and other artists who custom-craft each piece of jewelry to accommodate the freeform and uncalibrated cabochons.
