archimania

Currently recognized by The Architect’s Newspaper, Top 50 Interior Architect, ranked 8th in Design by ARCHITECT magazine in 2018.
The Hub Studio project will be at Otherlands tonight and remain there for the next several weeks. Come check it out!
We are excited to share that archimania’s office in Memphis, Tennessee has received LEED Platinum Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the highest rating in the LEED program.
The 663 South Cooper project was driven by community reinvestment, a mission to unveil the performance economics of net zero and zero carbon design, and launched archimania’s Carbon Neutral Corridor Research, to be published in late Summer of 2024.
The study explores Middle America’s aging commercial corridor building stock, and the spaces between, as a conduit for 21st-century community building, defining district solutions that better position communities to combat climate change while connecting people through resilient, authentic and accessible design.
A more resilient future arises from collaboration, innovation and a collective commitment. Thank you to our fellow archimaniacs, consultants and contractor for your vision on this project.
We are excited to announce Hannah Papa and John Welcher have been elevated to Associate in the firm.
Hannah Papa, NCIDQ, IIDA, has been with the firm since 2015 bringing authentic solutions across typologies that enhance how we experience space. Her process is driven by the client relationship, exploring as partners the connection between interior design, the exterior envelope and the environment. Hannah seeks solutions that are responsive and resilient, considering with each project the economic, social, and environmental impact. Her belief that design should support connection, community and curiosity further feeds her love for her city and the environment. Hannah serves as mentor in the IIDA Student Mentoring Program and as Director of Administration on the IIDA Tennessee Board.
John Welcher, AIA, LEED Green Associate is passionate about architecture and its potential to contribute to stronger, more equitable communities. His belief in the positive social impact of architecture has led him to serve on multiple advisory boards for the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, Government Relations Committee for the State of Tennessee AIA, and numerous planning and visioning committees in addition to his current role on the AIA Memphis Board of Directors.
Congratulations Hannah and John!

Join us for the Cooper Young Corridor Clean-Up event next Saturday April 27th! Let's work as a community to beautify the Cooper Young Corridor. This is a great opportunity to meet new people, make a positive impact, enjoy some fresh air, and make our neighborhood cleaner and greener. Beginning at archimania at 4:30 p.m. and ending with $1 off pints at Memphis Made Brewing Co. Trash pickers and bags provided.
Kong Wee Pang’s sculpture, entitled ‘Pear Rabbit’ has made a home for the next year in front of the Scheidt Family Performing Arts Center on the University of Memphis Campus. Thank you to the Urban Art Commission for partnering to add this vibrant, interactive piece to the visual landscape.
The Madison Lofts in Overton Square are complete! This mixed-use project thoughtfully activates and compliments its urban context. This once underutilized and vacant site in Midtown is now anchored by a new building that houses residential on the upper levels and a future retail space with a glass façade on the ground floor. A pedestrian plaza accented with concrete planters buffer the restaurant space from the traffic on Madison while maintaining an urban connection to the streetscape. The simple massing of glass window wall, ebony stained wood and glazed brick integrate modern details with traditional materials.
Our archimaniacs returned to Lester Prep for the second consecutive year for Career Day! Hannah Papa, IIDA; Patrick Greene, Associate AIA, NOMA; Felipe Vera, Assoc. AIA, NOMA; and Heather Koury, LEED Green Assoc. shared samples, renderings and knowledge with these blossoming future architects. Several students inquired about the path to joining the profession and we hope their futures illuminate.
As the Garden Chapel at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare continues to be constructed, we’re pleased to see the lighting detail underneath the pavilion installed. This new garden will be a fully native pollinator habitat, surrounded by recycled terra cotta aggregate, reused from the demolished cooling tower stacks. Check out the aluminum composite material from alucobond on the exterior facade.
We can’t wait for everyone to enjoy the pavilion in Spring of 2024!
Exciting progress to see Memphis Merit Academy Charter School's new site taking shape. Thank you to the work of Grinder Taber & Grinder.
We had fun celebrating our archimaniac Chloe's baby shower. Check out these baby archimaniacs! Can you guess who is who?
Thank you to Memphis Business Journal for selecting Jacob Davis, AIA, for the annual 40 under 40 list. The annual 40 Under 40 selection showcases dynamic individuals in the local business community. We’re so proud of Jacob for being a selected community leader in architecture and his local community.
Our archimaniacs Greg Price, AIA, ASLA, LC and Jacob Davis, AIA had the opportunity of touring Mississippi State University’s Landscape Architecture Graduate students and Professor Peter Summerlin through Collage Dance Collective's facility and our office at 663 South Cooper. It was a great real-world experience for the students to see high-performance, sustainable projects, and we look forward to what the next generation of designers will create.
Congratulations to archimaniac Heather Koury, Hon. AIA, LEED Green Associate for her appointment to the WTC-TUFC Board of Directors. The West Tennessee Chapter of the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council offers resources, fosters collaborations, and represents all people in the pursuit of healthy urban and community forests.
Trees and urban forests are dynamic ecosystems that provide critical benefits to the community such as air and water filtration, reducing heat island effects, and mitigating climate change. By strategically integrating trees and urban forests in our design process, we are able to address site and community needs by fostering social connections, supporting health and wellbeing, and increasing economic value.

As part of a firm tour exchange with project architect, Self+Tucker Architects, we enjoyed a tour of Historic Melrose School Revitalization in Orange Mound. Built in 1938 and later to close in 1981, Melrose was the first Black high school in Memphis and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The 40,000 sf. building will be multi-use to include the Orange Mound branch of the Memphis Public Libraries including a Genealogy Center. We are constantly inspired to be building a better Memphis alongside our colleagues!
The Townsend Residence was designed for a California graphic designer and woodworker to create a cozy residence lined with select pieces from the owner’s personal collection. The design layout maximizes the kitchen space and provides a connection with the living area through the expansion into a former breakfast nook and again into the former dining room now purposed as the living space. The home's original blown glass windows were restored allowing the updated open plan to glow with natural light. We are thankful to AIA Memphis for honoring this project with an Award of Excellence.
The space is further reshaped by transforming the former hallway wall into an expanded millwork component to be utilized as an interactive storage spine throughout the home’s interior. In the living room, it serves as a media wall, while in the kitchen it contains several appliances, full-height storage, and a walk-in pantry. In the hall, it provides bookcases and a coat closet. In its intersection with the stairs to the second floor, the spine breaks for a pass-through bar area.
We design spaces for learning and growth that authentically represent our client’s vision. Aurora Collegiate Academy is a tuition-free college preparatory K– 5th grade charter school serving a diverse population of students from all over Memphis and the world, with over half of the student body coming from Spanish-speaking homes.
The project transforms the inner-city charter school through deliberate, minimal design moves and creative use of inexpensive materials to meet the strict budget requirements for the project while also creating a significant impact. The existing site consisted of a simple, 1960s era brick office building, with a barrel-vaulted concrete warehouse addition attached to the south end of the existing building. The exterior of the building was largely untouched, spruced up by cleaning and new paint, but the interior was transformed entirely, creating a jewel box along the busy Summer Avenue corridor. Thank you to our contractors Grinder Taber & Grinder for their skilled craft on this project.
We are so thankful to AIA Memphis for recognizing this project with an Award of Excellence.
We're thankful for the time we can come together as a firm. Thank you to our clients, partners and hardworking archimaniacs who foster connectedness. Hoping you get to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with friends and loved ones, thank you for letting us be a part of it!
Offering a big congratulations to one of our architects John Welcher, AIA for obtaining his LEED Green certification! We're thankful for his dedication as he will continue to lend his knowledge and skills to designing energy-efficient and sustainable buildings. archimania intends to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and use materials and resources more efficiently as we craft LEED-certified projects. We’re excited that demolition is completed at the future Methodist Le Bonheur Garden Pavilion. This endeavor is a testament to Methodist Le Bonheur's commitment to repurposing an abandoned space, significantly curbing carbon emissions through the transformation of an existing piece of infrastructure. Though demolition began in August of this year, Methodist has been dedicated to this project for over three years. We would like to express our sincere thanks to Flintco. for their invaluable contribution and skilled work towards making this project a reality. The Pavilion is on track to become a haven with a peaceful view of the sky and surrounding landscaping which makes use of local pollinator plants and repurposed terracotta for ground cover.
A staggering 40% of the world’s emissions is the result of the built environment. archimania cares deeply about the ongoing pursuit of reaching net zero emissions. To get us there, we need the innovative leaders of today committed to change alongside the brightest minds and creative thinkers yet to enter the field. By expanding opportunities and reducing fiscal barriers to higher education, we are better positioned as a global community to bring more equitable and inclusive solutions forward. Barry Alan Yoakum, FAIA, LEED AP, and his wife, Kathy Howard Yoakum, have established the Yoakum Zero Carbon Scholarship and Endowment at the UT College of Architecture and Design in Knoxville to support architecture students pursuing design that elevates environmental and cultural development of high design and high-performance integrations. Barry is a 1978 graduate of the College and Cofounder/CEO of archimania. It was our pleasure to celebrate the grand opening of the Girls Inc. of Memphis Patricia C. Howard Youth Farm in Frayser this weekend. Designing a space that will facilitate educational programming, STEM and an understanding of the farm-to-table movement was of upmost importance. We're grateful to create a facility which allows girls in our community to become future leaders, teachers and community members.
