SafeSpace Youth Action Board comes together to “Spread the Rainbow” COVID 19 project
by CONTRIBUTED CONTENT on JUNE 1, 2020
With shelter-in-place orders still in effect, local nonprofit SafeSpace had to cancel its Menlo Park teen mental health walk. Despite all the plans and lives placed on hold, the teens at SafeSpace Center decided to get creative and got busy on regular Zoom meetings.
Soon, over 40 teens from the Youth Action Board brainstormed new ways to spread the message of hope and support. This is when the Spread the Rainbow community project/contest was created. They mobilized the community to spread rainbows, wherever and however they wanted, to bring the community together in a common mission to share hope with each other
With many people out walking and biking, colorful rainbows began to spring up in their neighbor’s windows, bright rainbows greeted them on sidewalks, and creative bursts of colors and messages of hope appeared one after another.
Five winners were selected for their meaningful entries. Audrey Lee’s Cranebow won the middle school category (pictured above). “The scene is of 10 origami cranes flying in unison,” she said. “It serves as a reminder that although we are apart, we can still stay in touch with each other and be a community.”
Other winners are: Preschool – Kindergarten: Nolan Wang; Primary School: Jack Salmon; High School: Malia Tapp; Adult: Cameron Lindsey.
Commented SafeSpace Youth Action Board member Mikayla Wong, who is a Junior: “I wanted to be a part of the Spread the Rainbow project to help find light in this hard time. It’s really difficult to keep hope during this pandemic, but through this project, I was able to spread positivity, and I’m honored to have been a part of it. It was a new way for me to get involved with the community. I liked the idea of including everyone, as people from all ages were encouraged to participate.”

May is Mental Health Awareness month. SafeSpace Center is sponsoring a Spread the Rainbow art project for San Mateo, Menlo Park, and its surrounding communities.
The rainbow symbolizes hope, a light at the end of the tunnel, peace, and serenity. More significantly, rainbows are often seen after a rainstorm when the sun breaks through the clouds. It is not beautiful because of one color, but because they are all joined together!
Please join us and share the powerful and important message a rainbow represents for you. We have all been impacted by COVID-19 and the shelter in place has been a challenge for many of us. We send our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all of those who are working to keep everyone safe, healthy, and fed. May this rainbow spread faster than the virus itself and bring communities together

Happy spring break everyone! Hopefully everyone takes this time to focus on themselves with self-love and self-care. Whether it’s watching a new movie or hanging out with a friend, prioritize yourself this week!
“Mental health is so important to me because I know how bad it feels to experience mental health issues. I want to make sure people at my school know that they are not alone and mental health is a common problem.”
“[Anthropologist Ray] Birdwhistell also estimated we can make and recognize around 250,000 facial expressions.”

Take a minute to take a deep breath and reflect on how your mental health has been lately. Take one step at a time and keep on carrying on!
“Hi, I’m Amelia and I go to Menlo-Atherton. When I joined SafeSpace, I felt it was right for me because I want to make mental health a topic that more people talk about.”
3/4 of mental health disorders begin before the age of 24, so be sure to give support and ask for it early!
Make sure you are taking care of yourself before other people! You will lose sight of your mental health if you are constantly trying to please everyone around you. Put you first for once!

What’s the best kind of love? Self-love! Use Valentine’s Day to treat yourself: Watch your favorite movie, eat some chocolate, listen to music, or all three!
How to Help a Friend with an ED: Here are a few tips from Michelle Mangiardi, a therapist at Centered Wisdom:
- “Set aside time to have a private conversation with your friend and remind them that you love and care about them and want them to be healthy and happy.”
- “Educate yourself so you are aware of myths versus facts and are more able to help.”
Hi, I’m Marie and I’m a senior at Woodside Priory! As a part of SafeSpace, I spread awareness by creating social media comics, such as my current series on empathetic listening, as well as designing infographics and merchandise. I also regularly meet with peers and leaders at my school to discuss youth mental health reform. My favorite SafeSpace memory is of the community night we had last summer where I was making s'mores and listening to stories around the fire with my friends!
