Sequoia Adult School

Sequoia Adult School Has been serving the mid-peninsula community since it was founded in 1921; the school opened its Fair Oaks site in 1989.

Students can study English as a Second Language and take classes needed to earn a High School Diploma or a High School Equivalency Diploma, GED certificate and learn to use computers. Students can also learn how to start a business in classes offered in partnership with Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center. Care Solace is an online multilingual resource with a live 24/7 concierge meant to assist individuals in finding local mental health-related programs and counseling services. Sequoia Union High School District students have free access to Atlas Mental Health, a new app that helps people feel good about themselves.

Atlas facilitates guided journaling and around topics focused on life's central concerns while teaching concepts from Mindfulness, Social Emotional Learning, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Positive Psychology and Self Compassion research.

In celebration of Women's History Month, support staff at SAS created a brightly colored backdrop of influential women in history. Students and staff can search for names of the women pictured in the backdrop and collectively solve a word search puzzle. Students and staff are also invited to write a woman's name that inspires them on a notecard and post it to the display.

As a reminder, the North Fair Oaks Library down the street from us is part of SMCL. The majority of staff there speak Spanish and they can help you fill out the application there as well.

🎉Volunteer of the Session🎉

Sequoia Adult School would like to recognize and congratulate Mike Mokelke as the Volunteer of the Session!👏

Mike is a High School Equivalency tutor working one-on-one with Language Arts students. Since day one, Mike has shown tremendous commitment to our students. He is dedicated to their success and helping them reach their goals. Mike has helped multiple students pass the HiSET tests. He continues working with students supporting them as they continue their education at Canada College. We are so grateful for Mike!

What do you do for work?
I manage my portfolio of startup investments, and I tutor language arts.

What are your favorite hobbies?
Reading and staying in shape. I am currently reading Obama's The Promised Land.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Sequoia Adult School (SAS)?
People. People. People.

What's your greatest accomplishment or best memory at SAS?
It is most satisfying to see students improve and to learn that they have passed GED tests.

Do you have any advice to give to the other volunteers or students?
It is our privilege to help those who have come to the US. They help us improve our society and our own lives.

In collaboration with the County of San Mateo, we held a successful COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic at SAS on December 2.

Shout out to our Assistant Director, Ms. Dominguez, and Teacher Judith for coordinating this effort. Much gratitude to the San Mateo County workers and SAS teachers and staff who made this event a success.
