There are few endeavors that compare when it comes to learning hard work, respect, discipline, commitment, endurance, ambition, and self-control. Welcome to Studio R Ballet (SRB), where we are dedicated to superior ballet training and technique. It teaches discipline and dedication while cultivating a respect for the Fine Arts. It’s Terminology Thursday! Today’s word is rétiré, meaning “withdrawn.” Swipe to see our upper levels demonstrate rétiré at the barre. The difficulty of rétiré is keeping the hip down, the pointed foot beveled, the supporting knee straight, the torso in a straight square, and of course, keeping your balance. No one said ballet was easy, and even simple positions like rétiré are difficult to master!
It’s Terminology Thursday! Today’s word is sous-sus, where the dancer relevés to a tight fifth position. The exact way of doing this—performing a relevé and then crossing the ankles, or jumping straight to sous-sus—varies between different methods. Sous-sus involves crossing the ankles, but to ensure it’s done properly, the dancer must think of the legs engaging and crossing all the way down from the top of the inner thighs. Swipe to see two demonstration of a sous-sus!
We’re so excited to begin our 2022–2023 season! Today, we’re taking a look back at our mission and philosophies of teaching to prepare for our new season. At Studio R, we believe in pushing our dancers to improve their strength and technique while instilling in them a healthy, confident mindset. We’ve seen great success with our methods, and we’re so proud to teach such wonderful students!
Yesterday we finished our summer Balanchine clinic! The iconic George Balanchine—also known as the father of American ballet—created his method to reflect the exciting, fast-paced atmosphere of New York in the 1930s, when he came to America. He created several original ballets and always aimed for his choreography to showcase the music it was set to in a way that had never been done before. He wanted his audience to “see the music, hear the dance,” and this concept was one of the many things we taught our dancers in this summer’s Balanchine clinic.
Who knew pointe shoes have so many different components? That’s not the only complex thing about these shoes—the way they’re made, the thousands of individual models for every type of foot, and the unique way they’re broken in by each dancer makes pointe shoes some of the most complicated elements in the dance world. Check out the link in our bio or stories to learn more about pointe shoes and how we use them at Studio R.
Happy Friday! We have a new blog post up on our site all about pointe shoes. Tap on the link in our bio to learn about the history, anatomy, and creation of pointe shoes and how our students are taught pointe show technique.
We absolutely love teaching our students of all ages! And we love hearing that our goal of instilling confidence and respect in our students while teaching them masterful technique is successful. If you’ve left a review for Studio R, thank you!
(yesterday) in 1879, Agrippina Vanaganova, founder of the Vaganova method, was born. Vaganova danced for the Imperial Russian Ballet for many years before retiring and becoming an instructor for the world-renowned ballet. In this position, she devised a method for her dancers that included increased awareness of all parts of the body, exactness and precision in all movements, and a barre system where each step builds upon the next. Her esteemed method, sometimes known as the Russian method, is one of the most prominent methods used all over the world. At Studio R, the Vaganova method is one of 3 methods we use to teach our students classical ballet. Here, Vaganova is pictured with a student.
